I believe that the most important thing which a tutor can do for a student is providing support, encouragement as well as most importantly building confidence within the subject. The importance of constructing a Childs esteem and sense of accomplishment within a subject is often disregarded however the effect of doing so is transformative within…

Tutors should be a friendly guiding figure that the student feels that they can approach at any time for assistance. As a tutor, the best thing that I can give to a student is the confidence for them to feel that they can achieve greater and better things. A tutor can also inspire a student to be like them, a positive role model that helps shape…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is understand the student's mind and help them achieve their goal. The tutor can help them achieve their goal if they have difficulties and help them understand the basic concept. My strength as a tutor is the most important aspect of understanding the student. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning simple by building from a very strong foundation. The reason many students struggle with complex concepts is because their foundation is either weak or vague. My approach has always been to start with the basics, explain them in simple terms, and then gradually build…

The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. And in this way, the student will remember what he/she learns for a lifetime and not just for the purpose of examinations. I am a very patient Tutor,…

Make tutors unnecessary. The worst outcome is a student who can only solve problems when their tutor is in the room. Everything I do builds the student's own reasoning process, teaching them how to break down unfamiliar problems, check their own work, and trace errors back independently. In science that means understanding logic behind a formula,…

Being understanding and open minded may perhaps be the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student. Every student has varying strengths and limits and thus following the same approach may not have the desired result. Thus, being patient and having more than one explanation may prove in handy and help make a student develop trust in the…

1. A tutor must first believe that every child can succeed. Their confidence in the child alone will be able to shift their attitude towards learning. 2. A tutor must thoroughly understand each student and see them as a whole person, not just a *Mathematics student. 3. This is so that with regular assessments, the tutor can craft a learning…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is make the student feel truly listened to. When a student feels heard and understood, they gain confidence. A tutor should be patient and supportive. Every child sets his/her own pace of doing things and sometimes they might not get it right, so it is important to be understanding. Inside AshwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Aveen focused on mastering long division and multiplication, as well as practicing short division to strengthen calculation skills.

For Year 8, Liam worked through challenging ratio and rates questions from his exercise book and reviewed concepts with additional practice problems.

In Year 10, Sucheta completed revision for an upcoming probability test by tackling a range of practice questions and clarifying key ideas using her notes.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student, while confident with algebra basics, often avoided writing full working for long division and negative numbers—"writing the working out!" was a frequent reminder.

In VCE maths, another student relied heavily on reference notes during SAC preparation but missed organizing all definitions and examples in one place; "just needs to ensure all definitions and example questions are written out in his reference book."

A Year 11 learner showed hesitancy starting unfamiliar questions without guidance, which slowed progress under time constraints. These moments left students double-checking mid-task or feeling unprepared when faced with new problem types.

Recent Achievements

One Ashwood tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate during exams now independently applies logic and the process of elimination to tackle tough maths questions, even under timed conditions.

In a Year 8 session, a student who once skipped writing out their working has started laying out each algebra step on paper, which helps avoid earlier calculation mistakes.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who struggled with subtracting bigger numbers last term was able to solve multi-digit subtraction problems almost entirely on her own after guided practice this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashburton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ashburton Primary School.
