I consider patience to be the most important virtue in a tutor, setting small checkpoints between certain topics is a good strategy. A tutor should always pause and ask if the student has any questions or doubts about the concept. A tutor should make the student feel comfortable around them and they should not hesitate to ask any questions - no…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them believe in their own ability to learn. When a student gains confidence, they become more willing to try, make mistakes, and keep going — and that’s when real progress happens. A tutor’s job isn’t just to explain concepts, but to create a safe space where the student…

Understand his situation. Usually, they don't have a clear understanding of the basics and it is extremely important to know what level do they have and practice what might be the hardest. I believe that one of the most important things is making the student see that the subject is easy. Explain everything in a simple understandable way and…

I am of the opinion that the most important things for tutors to do is to be patient and make the student feel comfortable. It is perfectly normal not to understand or struggle with ideas that are taught in class immediately and students should feel as though they aren't getting judged because of it. Tutors are their to help and improve their…

A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

I think that understanding why a student is struggling is the most important thing a tutor can do. A student may be struggling with the subject itself or may be struggling with a specific concept. Additionally there may be external factors creating conflicts for the student. Being able to listen and relate has helped me become a great teacher in…

Listen to the student. I think it is of paramount importance for a tutor to listen to the problems the child is facing both academically and with the learning environment. In listening a tutor is then able to not only aid the student in what they are learning, but HOW they go about learning. I am organised and patient. I believe that as a tutor i…

Being able to give a full and comprehensive understanding of a syllabus, AND to make the student confident. Inside Balmain EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Charlie reviewed mean, median, mode and tackled Interquartile Range, then moved on to constructing and interpreting box plots using recent test questions.

Year 9 student Emma practised solving simultaneous equations and reinforced her understanding of algebraic equations through targeted problem sets.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ava focused on compound interest calculations and depreciation problems in maths, working through real-world scenarios for extra clarity.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student struggled with reading worded geometry questions fully, leading to missed key details—"she is still struggling picturing the different scenarios from the word questions," noted a tutor.

In Year 11, failure to plan and condense history notes led to either excess information or critical gaps when revising for assessments.

For Year 8 algebra, skipping steps in rearranging equations hid sign errors and slowed progress.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student repeatedly forgot multiplication tables during fraction work, causing frustration mid-task and slowing confidence growth when tackling more complex problems.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Balmain East noticed a big shift for one Year 10 student who had previously missed key details in algebra questions; she now checks each problem more carefully and rarely skips important information.

In Year 8 maths, another student moved from confusion with multi-step percentage problems to independently solving even the longest ones without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who once hesitated to read aloud tackled Level 11 and 12 books solo this week, finishing them with no help and even attempting the next level up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balmain Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nicholson Street Public School.
