Every student has different knowledge and ability. The most important thing to do as a physics tutor is to have the skill and patience to guide these students using what they previously known. Getting the answer right is not everything, but getting the students to know the fundamentals and theory to get the right answer is the important thing. I…

According to me, a physics tutor must collaborate with his students to set realistic goals for them in the short as well as long term. Apart from that, a tutor should definitely empower students with effective study methods, time management strategies, and organizational techniques as it encourages them to develop independence in their learning…

Offer another way of learning that teachers aren't able to. Teachers have to teach a multitude of students so if a single student in lagging behind the class, they aren't able to help. That is where tutors come in, tutors help students with specific areas of study and also prepares the student for exams and assignments in order for the student to…

I believe connecting with the student and understanding what their specific learning style and needs are is one of the most important things. As we all know, learning should not be restricted to getting good marks in any institution or to memorising lists of facts. The most important things that can be given are the motivation and ability to keep finding things out for oneself (and to fact check new information without relying on AI or internet rumour). Seeing and approaching topics…

Inside Bar BeachTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Henry focused on division facts and solving word problems involving angles, using visual aids for clarity.

In Year 9, Sarah worked through algebraic equations and practiced reading and interpreting box and whisker plots from real data sets.

For Year 11, Jack completed advanced Financial Maths questions on depreciation and dividend yield calculations, then applied these to past exam-style scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 financial maths, over-reliance on formulas made it hard for one student to adapt when questions changed style; "she gets nervous and not understand" if the structure varied.

In Year 10 algebra, another avoided challenging problems, skipping wordy or abstract questions that looked intimidating—confidence dropped sharply in these moments.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's written working was disorganised, making it difficult to follow her reasoning through multi-step problems. As noted: "Her working out methods and organisation lacks slightly." This sometimes meant errors went unnoticed until after marking, costing marks even when concepts were understood.

Recent Achievements

A Bar Beach tutoring session saw Danika, a high school student, start flagging questions she didn't understand in class and bring them to tutoring—a big shift from when she'd quietly struggle alone.

Another tutor noted Liz's steady growth in financial maths; after initially hesitating with dividend calculations, she now tackles exam-style problems independently and even explains her reasoning back to the tutor.

For a younger student, Lara began using time-blocking strategies for study planning and recently completed a practice test with 22/25—showing not just strong maths skills but much better organisation than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newcastle Region Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Newcastle Grammar Park School Campus.
