In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not force them into studying and to not put too much pressure on them to understand a certain topic. I believe that I can teach them in a way I have been taught and make them understand a certain problem easily. And even if I fail to make them understand I study the problem…

Actually engage and interact with the student to find where, and more importantly why they're struggling or need help. This not only is a short term solution to a single question which may be raised, but is extremely helpful in the long run as their problem solving skills and overall performance improves. Also, make sure the student actually…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only provide academic support but also help them overcome challenges faced in their educational journey. By giving advice, tutors also become mentors for students, guiding them by bringing out their maximal potential in their studies. One of my strengths as a tutor is my ability to break…

Encourage students and provide resources, because the more practice is done, the more confident the student can be in what they know. I am patient, and I tend to explain things clearly. I am able to see how different students learn in different ways, so I can adjust my teaching for them to learn most…

The most important thing I tutor can do for their student is to be compassionate and be a person they feel comfortable approaching when they're in doubt. Just doing this will make it so much easier for the students to ask for what they need instead of feeling hesitant that they'll look unintelligent. It also helps me really understand their…

Show commitment, whether its through showing up on time, or taking some of your spare time at home to mark their work. Also to support and encourage the individual to achiever their very best. I can explain a concept in many different ways, so if the student doesn't understand, I can easily explain in other ways until they get it. I can also adapt…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to believe in them and show encouragement. Self-esteem can be extremely vulnerable during schooling years, and tutors have the power to enhance their students' level of self-confidence and sense of self-efficacy. When I believe in their potential, work with their strengths, support their…

I believe that a tutor should be prepared to adapt to their students learning style to maximise their understanding. Being able to teach in a way where students are readily motivated and inspired by the way you teach. Be honest. It is very important for a tutor to be honest in their responses. Secondly, the language the teacher uses has great impact on the students. Therefore, the language should always be clear and clean. My strength as a tutor is that I can impart the concept in a very understandable manner using different aides (visual etc.). I make sure…

The most important thing for a tutor to provide to a student is confidence. Understanding the issues of a student. I believe that tutors should be able to understand why a student is struggling with something, and help them according to their strengths and weaknesses. A student won't be able to learn with advice that isn't applicable to them, because everyone's capability to learn isn't at the same level. Gaining a…

I believe that boosts a student's confidence in the school environment as they are receiving additional help from outside. This allows them to enjoy their time at school and develop positive learning habits. All of these effects will result in better grades for a student, once again fostering more confidence, and cycling back to better grades. I…

The most crucial role of a tutor is to simplify and engage with the content. Since students are already learning the material in school but struggling to grasp it, it is essential to use a different strategy. By making the content simpler and more engaging, the tutor can help the student to not only understand the material but to also apply it in…

MENTOR/TUTOR It is important that tutors have a friendly approach to students and make sure that students set a goal for every lesson. In my opinion, for a student to always be good at studying and getting good grades every time, the student has to master appropriate studying strategies. Hence, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the student how to study "smartly" and be more productive. Moreover, in high school, I used to go to coaching centre…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a students confidence and independent critical thinking skills. A good tutor should create a positive environment, providing clear guidance, and gradually help the student to…

Inside Bass HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Alessandro worked on turning improper fractions into mixed numbers and solved word problems involving basic operations.

Year 7 student Sarah focused on linear equations, including solving for unknowns and representing relationships using graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Daniel revised trigonometric ratios to find unknown sides in right-angled triangles and practiced applying bearings in real-world navigation scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student's written work was flagged as "presentation of answers needed improvement"—for example, omitting brackets when multiplying negatives led to confusion and reworking.

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a calculator for basic index laws, which masked underlying gaps ("efficiency in using calculator is a plus," but errors persisted when the calculator wasn't available).

In Year 3 maths, another student struggled to keep working neat and often misplaced digits when carrying over in multi-digit addition; this slowed down problem-solving and sometimes resulted in repeated corrections rather than steady progress.

Recent Achievements

One Bass Hill tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who used to stay quiet during lessons—this week, he asked questions proactively, instead of guessing and moving on.

A Year 11 student had struggled with factorising non-monic equations but, after several sessions, was able to work through them independently and even explained her method out loud.

Meanwhile, in primary school maths, one student who'd hesitated over mixed fractions before is now confidently adding them with the same denominator and even picked up improper fractions without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chester Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bass High School.
