A tutor must be able to adapt to the specific needs of a student, including their teaching style and manner as there is no point in teaching a child in a manner that doesn't suit their learning ability and preferences. I believe that personalisation is what sets apart a tutor from an effective teacher. Students should initially be analysed for their approach to questions, personal goals and grievances to adroitly construct a program for them to adapt to. Consistency can further this notion and assist the student in improving their grades. My Strengths as a tutor…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to celebrate a student's success, whether it is big or small. It builds a student's confidence and motivation to keep learning. For example, I would acknowledge their success or completion of goal right away with specific praise, like "I'm really proud of how you stayed focused on that…

I think the most important part of for a student to achieve their full potential whilst feeling confident with what they are learning. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is firstly enhance their knowledge. Also schools may be a great learning space, sometimes because of the amount of students in a class, it may become hard for a child to communicate and get extra help from the teacher. Thus, a tutor is able to provide this by directly helping students and…

Inside BlacktownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Josh worked on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages as well as calculating GST and understanding price changes.

In Year 9, Chloe revised Pythagoras' theorem alongside practice with coordinate geometry—specifically finding midpoints and distances between points using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Abby tackled genetic technologies for an assessment task, breaking down the implications of gene therapy for Spinal Muscular Atrophy and clarifying the relationship between genotypes and phenotypes.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student arrived without a textbook or reference materials, making it difficult to engage fully with the lesson content.

In Year 9, one student struggled to keep up with classwork and admitted to not completing assignments on time—"he has not been keeping up with class work which is something we need to work on."

For a Year 11 Biology session, messy note-taking and trouble organizing research made revision harder; she often forgot definitions and key terms during review.

In senior years, difficulties in breaking down exam questions led to hesitation when answering under timed conditions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Blacktown recently noticed some great progress with students across different year levels.

In Year 4 maths, Chloe had struggled to remember her times tables, but after steady practice, she could recall the 7 and 8 times tables from memory and applied them to fraction problems with much more ease than before.

At the high school level, Josh moved from needing step-by-step help to solving most trigonometry questions independently; last session he even corrected his own mistakes without prompting.

Meanwhile, Abby began structuring her biology assessment responses more clearly after learning to highlight key words for each dot point.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lalor Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Patrician Brothers' College Blacktown.
