I think communication with your student is important. As a tutor, you can not force a student to do things your way, so it's important to be able to compromise and help them with what they think is important so they don't lose interest in a subject, whether it is a struggling student or one that wants to excel. By involving them in the process you…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to step back wherever they can. Tutoring is not giving all the answers or fixing all the problems, but rather it is about setting the framework for students to learn skills and techniques to solve academic problems themselves. Tutoring is about guidance, as opposed to metaphorically holding a…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are: helping to empower them to improve their results in their chosen subjects through listening to their concerns and working through them in a step-by-step manner. I think a really good tutor is capable of making learning exciting and fun. The best way to do this is to clearly communicate why someone is doing what their doing and to find ways for the student to connect to the material on a personal level. This is something I strive to do with all students. I think I'm personable and have alot of life…

A tutor, morally, can pave a path to right mindset for a student and impart knowledge not just of textbooks but moral education too . Tutors can also play a role of godparent for many students in life via providing mature guidance . I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their ability to learn and think independently. Teaching students how to learn not only helps them to do well in their exams, but…

The biggest part of tutoring is adjusting to the various communication styles of each student, when students rely on visuals to understand a topic, the tutor needs to present graphs or sketches to exemplify formulas in a more visual manner when students prefer to learn using examples the topic needs to be translated into more tangible manners.…

I believe that creating open communication is a very important part of teaching. Provide support to students in both the academic and mental difficulties they might be going through. Often as a tutor you must recognise that students who get tutoring need further help than what is being given and may have academic insecurity, so it is our role to help them improve on this and gain confidence in their learning, with hopes that…

I think the most important thing is to inspire students to learn more and improve in their own respective ways, as it is crucial that we teach them methods of how to learn instead of just force-feeding knowledge. Tutors should teach strategies that are easily implementable for a variety of situations so that students can confidently adapt their…

Inside BraddonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Rhys worked on calculating the surface area and volume of 3D shapes, then started addressing gaps in fraction skills using electronic flashcards.

In Year 8, Lara focused on solving algebraic equations and simplifying expressions by collecting like terms.

For Year 9, Amity practiced applying ratios to real-world problems and converting between map distances using scale, reinforcing her understanding with practical examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student sometimes forgot to memorise formulae and, as noted, "the difficulty is in reasoning through how to calculate the surface area of the prism"—this meant extra time spent hunting for steps rather than applying knowledge.

In Year 10 algebra, a reluctance to write out the full working led to confusion with sign errors and missed simplification opportunities.

For a primary student tackling fractions, mixing up when to add versus multiply resulted in hesitation during problem-solving.

One senior student's tendency to approach worded questions only by "memorising" methods left her unsure when new twists appeared on exams.

Recent Achievements

One Braddon tutor noticed a big change in Juan, a high schooler who had previously struggled to keep up—he's now taking the lead on tricky questions and working through problems independently after revising at home between sessions.

In Year 10 maths, Becky has shifted from quietly following along to actively choosing which word problems she wants to tackle, showing she can now internalise how to solve them rather than waiting for step-by-step help.

Meanwhile, Evie (Year 3) used to guess at multiplication tables but is now breaking down harder ones herself and explaining her thinking out loud during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dickson Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Merici College.
