100% Motivation and ensuring they feel like they have a support structure whose best interest is to see them succeed. Too many people in my year have lacked motivation to study effectively and as a result, their grades faltered. The school proceeded to threaten to kick them out of their ATAR classes, which only worked to further demoralise them…

I believe that a tutor should plan individually for each student to cater for their needs. Each student has their own strengths and weaknesses, and it should be the tutor's role to discover these and change their teaching approaches accordingly. A good tutor should be able to encourage the students to overcome setbacks and achieve their best…

In my opinion, the most important thing, that a tutor can do for the student is to understand the problems which the student is facing, and then come up with a plan on how to overcome these problems. Apart from this, understanding the knowledge graph of the student, and teaching him/her according to the pattern, which they understand the most, is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to their needs, and adapt lessons accordingly. Every students learns differently and struggle in different areas, so it is crucial that a tutor can adapt to them. Building their confidence and making learning engaging and managable is also very important. I feel my biggest strength as…

As a tutor, I believe the most important thing is to help one who helps others to digest concepts and knowledge in an interactive and friendly environment while retaining their interest to study the knowledge. A tutor must be able to build a students confidence, and not a dependence. For instance, lets say in physics, rather than teaching a student to memorise formula or answer, a good tutor will ensure the student understands the subject and how to apply it. This mindset is extremely crucial to building student confidence, and it stays in memory much…

As a math and physics tutor, motivating students to do more practice questions is the best thing I can do for them. The more they understand concepts, the better they link them and apply them in difficult questions requiring analysis. My legacy for students is for them to feel inclined in doing more and more questions, it is from there a passion…

To support and give great motivation to the student is the most important thing. The depth of knowledge across the math subject from year 7…

The most important thing any sort of teacher or mentor can do for not just students, but anyone, is to make sure the students believe in themselves and their abilities, for that will take them beyond any test or assignment. Michael has made a huge difference already, and we are very happy with his work so far. Mia is listening to him and there is some great mutual respect happening. I love that when mia doesn't know something he ensures to not make her feel silly. It has helped her confidence Immensely.

Inside BraybrookTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Chelsea focused on surds and the first five laws of indices, then practised Pythagoras' Theorem for both finding hypotenuse and shorter sides, using diagrams to reinforce understanding.

For Year 9, Ruby tackled negative indices and exponential equations before moving into graphs of exponential growth and decay.

Meanwhile, primary student Ethan (Grade 5) completed NAPLAN numeracy practice, including dot plots and multi-step worded questions to build confidence with data displays and problem-solving.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student often avoided writing out working when solving linear equations, saying "I can do this in my head," which led to missed sign errors and confusion during revision.

In a senior class, a Year 11 found herself relying heavily on her calculator for trigonometry but struggled on non-calculator tests—she wasn't confident with manual division or recalling times tables.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner left homework incomplete after a busy week; gaps in fraction skills persisted into lessons. Each instance left the student frustrated, searching for answers that could have been clearer with stronger habits.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Braybrook noticed that Chelsea, a Year 10 student, has gone from struggling with surds to confidently simplifying them and now independently applies trigonometric ratios to complex worded problems—a big leap from earlier sessions where she hesitated with multi-step processes.

Sasha, also in high school, recently started sketching parabolas by completing the square without prompts and tackled all questions on her test, even when unsure—showing new initiative compared to her previous reluctance.

Meanwhile, Camilla in Year 5 has begun creating dot plots herself and now explains her answers out loud after previously staying quiet during problem-solving.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Caroline Chisholm Catholic College.
