A private tutor can provide a more tailored experience to the student which large group classes at school often cannot, and can keep better track of their own strengths and weaknesses to improve. I am patient and has experience dealing with students of different age groups, from my own younger siblings and relatives to other…

To me, a tutor is the catalyst to a student's learning. Not only providing valuable insights into learning techniques and skillsets constructed from personal experience, but also giving students the necessary ingredients for building their own toolset with guidance and advice. I personally love approaching different tasks in different ways that…

One of the most vital things a tutor should do is ensure that he is understood teaching-wise and that he understands his pupils perfectly. One thing that some teachers don't have is empathy for the unique condition of a student. A student's ability to learn can be affected in various ways, like by his surroundings and so on. It is significantly…

I feel the most important thing that a tutor can do is to listen to the students as they explain what they don't understand and to help fully explain the solution of the problem to the student and to verify that the students understands the new concepts. I am patient with the students and I can work through many examples with the student until he…

I believe taking the time with each individual student and connecting with them on a personal level is the most important thing as each student is going through different experiences and difficulties. I believe this is the difference between being a tutor to becoming a mentor as well which will elevate the students' skills in many ways not only in…

As a student myself, the important things a tutor can do for a student can provide a clear and simple explanation and help them how to break down a given problem and apply the learned concept in real-life scenarios. And, another important point to note is that every student is unique, so as a tutor, I should be able to adapt to the teaching style…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding of any…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and cheer on their student, allowing the student to maintain their self esteem even when they are having trouble. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students build confidence in their learning. Many students already have the ability to succeed but just need someone to guide them and explain things in a way that makes sense. A good tutor should be supportive, patient, and willing to adapt to the student’s learning style. It’s also…

Tutors can support other educators to help students learn how to learn. 1-on-1 support can help shed light on the exact nature of any obstacles a student might experience, which might be missed in a group classroom setting. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student, is to show the easiest method to learn the content of the subject. A tutor can teach the way to decode the subject matter. Once, the tutor teach the method to learn and the student understand that method, a student should become independent to learn similar topics. I think a tutor…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them believe in themselves. Academic support is important, but confidence is what truly changes everything. I think that being able to listen to your student and understanding how they think is really important. Also when things are difficult for them to understand, I think that it's important to show support and not show signs of disapproval or anything negative because it can directly affect a student's willingness to learn. Being able to adapt to a…

Inside Brunswick WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jade practised **addition techniques like rainbow facts and doubles**, and worked through school worksheets on identifying quarters.

For Year 9, Mia focused on **expanding and factorising algebraic expressions** as well as tackling worded algebra problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Liam reviewed **trigonometric functions—particularly angles of elevation and depression—using worded problem scenarios** to prepare for his upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students arrived without essential materials such as notebooks or homework, making it difficult to revise specific topics or track progress—one Year 10 student, for instance, "forgot her maths book, so we had to work off internet worksheets and our memories of what the test was going to cover."

In senior years, over-reliance on calculators appeared: a VCE student scored much lower on non-calculator sections ("marks were 22% (no calculator) and 45% (calculator/open book)"), highlighting a need for stronger mental arithmetic skills.

Across primary and middle years, perfectionism or fear of error often led to freezing up instead of attempting answers; as one tutor observed, "she will freeze up at a question until I prompt her to either tell me if she 'has no idea' or 'give me any answer, even if you think it's wrong.'" This hesitancy slowed practice and sometimes left gaps unaddressed in real time.

Recent Achievements

One Brunswick West tutor noticed that a Year 10 student who previously left tricky worded maths questions unfinished was able to complete one independently after just a few prompts, and then proactively asked for feedback on his creative writing, showing real openness to improvement.

A high schooler preparing for exams started bringing her own revision materials and, after working through trigonometry problems together, could solve similar ones entirely alone—something she hadn't managed before.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who relied heavily on finger counting now uses new addition strategies automatically and even graphed his improved worksheet times to show his mum.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
