For me, the two most vital things a tutor can do are to make learning stick and make it last. To make it stick, I focus on practical application. I bridge the gap between textbook theory and the real world, which makes the information tangible and easier to comprehend. To make it last, I focus on building the skills for continuous,…

I think besides helping a student with his/her academics, a tutor can act as a role model for him/her or someone he/she can look up to. A tutor can not only provide academic assistance but also can broadens a student's outlook in many ways by sharing with him/her many stories, news and also giving an idea about manners and ethics as well. The most…

Build a healthy relationship with student and help them build a healthy relationship with learning in general so they don't dread showing up to class/tutor feeling like they don't belong. It is also crucial that they believe in themselves and sustain a growth and open mindset when approaching studying. I feel like THE most important concept…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is build confidence in the student. I've encountered a few students in the Year 5 STEM and Maths program at my school who were quiet and I began to realise that they didn't believe that they could learn STEM or improve their math skills because they thought they were 'dumb'. I quickly turned…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help guide them in a non-intrusive and non-judgmental way. Every student has their own path in life and they all may be in different places on that path. The best thing a tutor can do for a student is help them think about where they want to go on that path beyond just studying…

Adaptability – every student is different. For many reasons some students perform better than others. Ability to involve with students and understanding where they are lacking would allow me as a tutor to teach the building blocks of learning. This is in line with the hope that most students keep on a tutor or a teacher that can enhance their…

In my perspective, the most important things a tutor can do for a student are as follows: 1.Create a positive and supportive learning environment. 2.The tutor should collaborate with the student to set clear and achievable learning objectives. 3. When teaching complex subjects, tutors should break down information into smaller, more digestible…

All students need a little help, a little hope, and somebody who believes in them. That somebody is definitely their tutor. Tutors do not just give out answers, they want students to understand how to do the work on their own. Tutoring is a huge liability as your students look upon you as a mentee and a good tutor never lets them down.…

Inside BurnsideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Alice focused on rearranging algebraic equations to solve for x in more complex solutions and applied index laws 4–6 using worked examples.

Another Year 10, Ben, practiced simultaneous equations alongside worded problems involving inequalities, then reviewed parabola intercepts and turning points through pre-test analysis.

For Year 9, Sarah revised box and whisker plots by constructing five-number summaries and identifying outliers, then differentiated between mean, median, mode, IQR, and range when interpreting real data sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working on advanced Methods content hesitated to show full algebraic steps, which made it difficult to spot sign errors—"he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 learner preparing for a test grew noticeably distracted and rushed through perimeter problems after studying for multiple assessments the day before.

In English, a Year 10 student struggled to link evidence clearly to essay prompts, making arguments less convincing.

During a Year 4 session, anxiety about getting answers wrong led to hesitation and incomplete written working in worded maths questions.

Recent Achievements

A Burnside tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating to speak up, began actively pointing out mistakes in both their own and others' working during sessions—showing real growth in self-monitoring and willingness to engage.

In Year 9 maths, one student moved from needing step-by-step support with trigonometry to independently recalling the SOHCAHTOA acronym and applying it confidently to worded problems.

Meanwhile, a primary schooler who used to rush through ratio questions now takes time to explain her reasoning for each answer, clearly demonstrating deeper understanding by talking through her process without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Caroline Springs Library & Learning Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Burnside Primary School.
