Besides helping them understand and learn a topic, the tutor should also help the student master the topic through mastery learning. Mastery learning is a way of designing units of work so that each set of tasks focuses on a particular learning objective and students must master a task to move onto the next one. The tutor should also help the…

The most important qualities are patience and compassion. When a tutor is knowledgeable about the subject and shows understanding towards students who are struggling, those students will feel safe and be more open to learning. I provide examples to clarify concepts, and I'm willing to explain the same material multiple times until my students…

From personal experience, I have had a few unfair and unsatisfactory experiences with tutors throughout my schooling journey. As a result, I have learnt from those experiences and structured my services in regards to having the student as the main focus. Give the student confidence. Confidence either to persist with the hard work till they hit a breakthrough or the confidence to thing around the problems. There are a lot of students who don't lack in talent and just a couple little things are holding them back. Solving those can really help them grow. I am able to seperate a topic into byte sized…

I think a tutor can teach a student how to learn a topic after it is explained by the tutor. Because at the end, it is the student who needs to learn by themselves after something is being taught to them. A tutor should make sure that anyone can learn those topics on their own if they are introduced by the tutor. My first strength as a tutor is my…

Be an example. Be relaxed, and make the student enjoy the subject without feeling like education is be all end all. Knowledge and grades are only a means to an end, a tutor should make sure the students understand that. I can relate and communicate with students. A tutor can inspire a student to learn more and be inquisitive. Making the student ask more questions and grasp the concepts, are the major things a tutor can do for a student. I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

I think listening to them to make sure their needs are known and understood by all parties involved. Making it a fun and rewarding experience for both parties is also important, as this can show a student how good the experience can be,…

In my opinion, it's most important to help students to understand basic concepts and theories when tutoring them. With these knowledge, students will have confidence to overcome problems and hardness in Maths by themselves. As a tutor, I believe it is critical for providing a space for students to not be afraid to be wrong and foster engagement. A tutor must allow students to think for themselves and provide prompts which enable more critical and deeper thinking. A tutor must be able to understand the different needs for each student and be able to provide the…

Inside Camden ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Mavis explored simple fraction addition and subtraction using physical representations, then linked her interest in marine life to a reading comprehension task about anglerfish.

In Year 10, Una worked on understanding break-even points and capital gains in Maths, alongside reviewing atomic theory and mole calculations for Chemistry.

For Year 11 Biology, Lily focused on exam preparation by practicing mock questions on DNA replication and protein synthesis, while also editing a biotechnology essay using her teacher's slides for support.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student left her maths booklet at home, so she was unable to complete planned activities—organization of materials remains a hurdle.

In senior Biology, one student's report was submitted unfinished, with the conclusion and discussion missing before the deadline ("the report was unfinished").

For a Year 11 Chemistry task, another struggled to include in-text references and faced grammatical issues that made her writing harder to follow.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student repeatedly checked each answer step-by-step for reassurance during algebra practice, slowing independent progress.

These moments left them scrambling or less confident during assessment preparation.

Recent Achievements

One Camden Park tutor noticed a Year 8 student who previously hesitated to read aloud now volunteering to tackle comprehension passages and even tackling unfamiliar words, showing real persistence when pronouncing trickier terms.

In a recent high school session, a senior student who used to miss key science definitions was able to recall and accurately explain challenging vocabulary like "vestigial" and "homologous structures," using the correct scientific language without prompting.

Another high schooler came prepared with her own list of last-minute questions for test revision, driving the session herself and finishing with clear answers on topics she'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Marion Mobile Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Plympton International College.
