Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel comfortable learning the material the school gives them and to develop good study skills. Students have different learning styles and process information at different paces. A school can't accomodate all the individual learning styles of their students, but tutoring…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student for mi consideration would be listening to my students and get to know them in order to adjust and assess my strategy and way of teaching as a tutor, and in that way the tutor can be the most creative as it can, giving hints and techniques to students on how to think by themselves, question…

The main thing is being able to effectively explain a topic or clear students' doubts. If the student is able to explain the topic to others, I believe that is a good indication of their understanding and shows that a tutor has successfully explained a topic or cleared doubts. My main strengths are that I am patient and eager to learn myself. If I…

The most important things a tutor can do are to create a safe, encouraging learning environment, help students build confidence, and guide them to develop their own problem-solving skills rather than just giving them answers. I’m patient, a good listener, and I always try to explain things in a way that makes sense to each individual student. I…

Having faith in students, being supportive towards them and being patient with them. A tutor should always be available for doubts any number of times, and shouldn't get annoyed with students. Further a Tutor can mentor the student both academically and emotionally to boost the morale. This can can instill confidence and help the student to think logically and inculcate creativity and…

Instill the resilience and capacity for students to dedicate and apply themselves to their learning rather than being dependent on a tutor to give them all the answers. As a tutor, I can teach concepts and skills from a different perspective to what the student learns in a classroom. As a tutor, I get to spend a lot of time one-on-one with students, which means I can specifically understand individual needs and adjust my approach accordingly. This means that students can get the most out of their sessions with…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence in their ability to solve problems and understand concepts. Sarah McGregor, Carnegie

Inside CarnegieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lucas worked on measurement conversions between units and explored different types of angles using visual examples.

In Year 9, Sarah practised expanding and simplifying algebraic equations to solve for "x," along with adding terms involving variables and numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Aiden focused on quadratic equations—both solving them and reviewing their graphical representations as parabolas—in preparation for an upcoming quiz.

Recent Challenges

Homework was incomplete for a Year 7 student, which limited progress in consolidating division and multiplication skills—one lesson note simply read, "Homework was incomplete."

In Year 9 algebra, confusion with equation signs persisted when working through substitution tasks; as one tutor observed, "Alex is slightly confused by the sign while substituting value in the equation," leading to repeated errors during practice.

A senior student tackling probability scenarios sometimes hesitated to start multi-step problems, pausing at worded questions and requiring extra prompts to extract relevant information before attempting solutions. This often meant less time spent on building fluency and confidence within sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Carnegie tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with matrix multiplication; after revisiting earlier lessons, she now attempts the harder two-matrix problems without waiting for help.

Another high school student has gone from struggling with algebraic manipulation to quickly solving for unknowns—her speed and accuracy have noticeably improved during problem sets.

In primary, one learner who often guessed answers now takes time to double-check fractions before responding out loud. Last session, he completed every question on his own and asked for an extra challenge at the end.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carnegie Primary School.
