A trait I consider to be very important as a tutor is being a good leader. They should be very responsible for their actions, meaning that they will ensure each tutoring session is effective for the student. They should also be assertive, trustworthy and mindful, which helps them offer guidance to other students. Lastly, they should keep an open…

Above all else, I think a tutor can give a student confidence in whatever work students have due. Once their confidence is built up, they will respond better to not just tutoring outside, but also teaching in the classroom and result to a deeper understanding of the content. I think I am well versed in most subjects, and am an excellent…

To teach students that it is okay to be wrong or make mistakes as long as you correct it afterwards. It is important to attempt to answer each question on a test and work sheet as if you attempt it then you might get some points on your final grade. It is also important to become self confident and trust that you can tackle any problem. I will…

The most important thing is to keep calm and listen to them. As a tutor you can never lose your calm irrespective of how many times your student makes the same mistake. You might have to repeat yourself hundreds of times, but that shouldn't be a problem. It is important to understand their questions and respond to them accordingly. It is also…

A tutor should be extremely caring when it comes to their students. Often, especially kids, are afraid to ask tutors questions at the risk of "sounding dumb". I believe it is the tutor's foremost responsibility to assure the students that learning is for everyone, and they are not alone when facing that doubt. Perseverance, organisation, patience,…

Each student learns in a unique way and at a different pace and thus a good tutor must understand this and personalise their learning. Alongside this, the tutor must focus on building the student's confidence and teaching to their strengths before wandering into waters unfamiliar to the student. I believe that teaching to the student's needs and…

Each student has a unique way of thinking, understanding and implementing. The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand how their students minds work, adapt to their way of thinking and understanding, and conceptualize theory for beneficial implementation. To build their confidence in the subject, If they feel they are not able to complete a section and lose motivation they should be shown that they absolutely can, and to not give up. A tutor MUST be able to explain concepts to students in very different ways that allow them to understand a difficult topic. Sometimes teachers at school cannot personally cater to students, so tutors should strive to explain things in a very eloquent, logical manner so that the student can follow. Ability to relate. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is tailor their teaching to the individual. Outside of a large class of students it becomes easier to change a lesson to suit a particular student, spending more time on a point when a student is struggling with it and ensuring that a topic is perfectly understood before moving on. I think…

Inside ClarindaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex practised addition and subtraction with and without regrouping using worded problems, and explored multiplication through different strategies including times tables.

In Year 9, Jasmine focused on trigonometric ratios to solve for missing sides or angles in triangles, making use of calculator techniques and applying these skills to 2D geometry problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael worked through polynomial long division and the remainder/factor theorem, then applied these methods to solve cubic equations.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 3 reading session, one student struggled to stay focused, attempting to juggle multiple books at once and joking instead of engaging with the text—making it hard to complete any story meaningfully.

In Year 10 Maths, "she left her notes at school again and was forced to flip through pages of digital files," which slowed problem-solving in finance questions and increased confusion over formulas.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student repeatedly missed bringing her CAS calculator home, limiting her ability to practice data entry and graphing between sessions.

Missed homework and disorganized materials kept resurfacing as stumbling blocks across grades.

Recent Achievements

A Clarinda tutor noticed that a Year 3 student, Julian, made a big leap in reading—he now sounds out unfamiliar words by himself instead of skipping them.

In high school maths, Jaxon (Year 10) started taking his own notes and simplifying tricky content, which helped him remember key concepts from earlier sessions—previously he'd forget details week to week.

Another high school win: after struggling with statistics tests before, one student scored 86 on her latest assessment and was able to explain her working without prompting, showing much more independence than at the start of tutoring.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clarinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Andrew's School.
