For me, the most important things a tutor can do are build trust with the student, explain concepts clearly, and create a positive, supportive environment. When students feel comfortable and supported, they are more willing to ask questions and take on challenges Breaking down complex ideas into simple steps helps them understand and apply what…

Listening with patience. Teaching isn't a one way process. The student and the tutor both need to engage with each other. Ability to assess the current level of understanding of the student and then grooming him/her to reach a desired level of excellence. Also, the ability to simplify complex concepts and keep the students motivated and…

To individualise teachings tailored to the needs of a given student. It is important to accomodate to the strengths and weaknesses of each student, and consequently plan a learning regime in accordance. Likewise, it is imperative that a tutor has deep understanding of the topic at hand such that I am able to provide profound logical and weighted…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them a sense of confidence when they return the classroom after having something explained to them in a way they can understand. Ideally the end goal a tutor should have is for a student to be able to understand concepts in a subject by themselves, without the explanation of a tutor.…

To teach students that it is okay to be wrong or make mistakes as long as you correct it afterwards. It is important to attempt to answer each question on a test and work sheet as if you attempt it then you might get some points on your final grade. It is also important to become self confident and trust that you can tackle any problem. I will…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is offer an environment where they can comfortably learn and raise any concerns or questions they might have. This comes from building a good relationship with the student, which often not many tutors do, making the student's learning ineffective. Offering an organised and well thought…

In my opinion, the role of a tutor goes beyond simply imparting knowledge. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make them love learning, and equip them with the tools to thrive independently. It's about being a guiding light through challenges, a source of motivation, and a trusted resource for…

Being willing to help, but also acknowledge the rare instances where a tutor may be unable to help to a confident level. I believe it is better to acknowledge if you do not know something rather than pretend you do and risk teaching something that is incorrect. When this problem is encountered, however, it is up to the tutor to rectify this by…

A tutor should be capable enough to teach their students in a way where the knowledge imparted isn't just taught for the exams or tests, but taught as a lesson which will remain with them for the rest of their lives. I am extremely patient when it comes to explaining a concept. I am very calm and composed around people who are younger to me.…

Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the needs of the student and then perform. Don't put unnecessary pressure on the students. For the majority of students I have met, a large proportion approach their studies disinterested. Thus, the tutor’s most crucial responsibility is not only to effectively convey the subject matter, it is to do it in a way which sparks engagement. This extends further for theoretical subjects such as chemistry, where the tutor assumes a greater…

Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ignite a passion and 'vision' for learning. Our current society tends to view academia as a means to an end as opposed to an ends in itself, and if a tutor awakens a love for the subject in his student, then they have succeeded. By doing so, the student becomes more engaged and receptive…

I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

A tutor is someone that helps students with their academic studies so that they get a better understanding of the subject .So for example, for biology subject ,a tutor needs to explain the concept rather then helping them reciting the subject without understanding. When students grasp the concept of the subject ,they are less likely to forget it…

Inside ClaytonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Olivia focused on VCE Biology Unit 3 topics, including nucleic acids and DNA/RNA manipulation processes like transcription and translation, working through sample exam questions for deeper understanding.

Year 9 student Thomas practiced solving equations involving powers and multiple variables in algebra, alongside word problems to reinforce these skills.

For a younger learner in Year 6, lessons covered measurement conversions between centimeters and meters as well as tackling multi-step worded questions that combined addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Biology student hesitated when differentiating between nucleic acids and amino acids, particularly during gene regulation discussions; as noted, "needs a little more support with the details of transcription."

In Year 9 Mathematics, persistent self-doubt was evident: despite understanding indices rules when prompted, she hesitated to apply them independently and made calculation errors.

For a Year 4 student, reluctance to speak up—"she stays quiet instead of telling me she doesn't know how to do the question or because she is afraid to get it wrong"—meant confusion lingered in multi-step word problems. In these moments, uncertainty led to missed opportunities for feedback and growth.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Clayton recently noticed a big shift for one Year 10 student who now answers exam questions unaided—something she used to depend on heavily.

In another session, a high schooler confidently explained the differences between DNA and RNA and handled tricky protein structure questions that had stumped her before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who'd been hesitant about reading aloud started making more attempts during lessons, moving from barely trying to giving it a real go.

One session ended with the student independently working through all her assigned maths problems after just a couple of practice runs together, showing true independent problem-solving.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like John Monash Science School.
