Help the student visualise or truly understand the concept instead of having to memorise the equations. If a student understands the concept, it could become intuitive for the student to know how to use the equation. One other important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be encouraging and empathetic, build the student's confidence and…

Tutors have to be cooperative and empathetic to teach students. Moreover, they need to embody leadership qualities. It is necessary for the students to enjoy learning so that they can have a complete grasp of knowledge about a particular subject. This will allow them to achieve their desired results. I am a 3rd year biomedical engineering student…

Patience and not comparing them with the others. I believe that each student has their own pace of learning. Lack of patience and comparing them with others will certainly hamper their learning process and will give them less confidence on their studies. Understanding the most effective way of learning for each student is also crucial. When I was…

Tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. When a tutor…

A tutor can help students to develop their skills so they can think out of the box. The tutor helps students to build their foundations. Most important, the tutor helps students to become a good human being. I am always open to new thoughts. I never discourage students from asking relevant questions. I always try to link theoretical concepts with…

Everything begins with building a relationship with the child/student and getting to know them as a person, what interests them inside and outside of school. I believe in my students and their ability to succeed academically and overall and I make this message clear. I tell them, on a regular basis, I believe in you! You can do this! I won't…

Tutoring is very different to a typical classroom setting. Each class is unique and solely focused on the one student. This one-to-one learning experience is something many students wouldn’t normally get in a classroom. Naturally, they’ll be able to ask as many questions as they want. As a result, you’ll feel you’re making a real…

A tutor can intiate the interest in studies in the student and get him/her out of the virtual box of fear that a certain subject is difficult to master. On of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is make sure they understand the concept fully and understand how a formula was found instead of just using it to solve problems. I also believe it is important to make sure things are explained intuitively to students to help them understand the specifics of a topic better. Lastly, I…

I believe a tutor should adapt to the student's learning style. Beyond that, I also consider building a strong bond with the student, creating a supportive and comfortable environment, setting clear goals, providing constructive feedback, and instilling a sense of confidence and self-efficacy to be equally important. In my view, the most important things a tutor can do is to build a positive relationship with a student which is the key to become an effective teacher. I think being more practical, by being more open. By explaining problems with examples of real life, with things they already know and have seen. What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are build self-confidence, without this they will not believe in themselves and their ability, and therefore will not make the improvements they are capable of, inspire them to create their own goals, both long-term and short term, big and small, and of course, help…

Justine, North Strathfield

Inside Concord WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Nick completed an English assessment focused on oral communication, reading comprehension, and writing skills such as organising ideas and editing.

In Year 11, Sophie reviewed the causes of inflation—including demand-pull, cost-push, and imported inflation—and explored how inflationary expectations affect the economy.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Daniel tackled Australia's Balance of Payments by breaking down the Current Account and Capital and Financial Account, then worked through measuring relative exchange rates using both individual currencies and the Trade Weighted Index.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Economics, one student relied heavily on scanning class notes without pausing to make their own summaries or practice deeper exam-style questions. As noted, "more practice before the exam is recommended given the amount of content," but rushed reading meant connections between topics like inflation and unemployment were missed.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 Maths student often left calculation steps out—especially when dividing fractions—which led to "unnecessary mistakes" in multi-step problems.

For a Year 7 English task, another learner skimmed texts quickly, missing key similarities and differences; this left writing disjointed and lacking evidence for main ideas.

Recent Achievements

A Concord West tutor recently noticed Khai, a senior student, making significant strides in Economics—he went from hesitating over unfamiliar business terms to confidently inferring meanings and leading strong discussions about funding sources.

In Year 11 Business Studies, another student who previously wrote mainly descriptive responses has begun shifting towards more analytical writing after targeted feedback.

Meanwhile, Zarraf in primary English sessions now maintains eye contact and expands on his ideas when prompted; this marks a big change from earlier reluctance to share during oral tasks. Last session, he even used contextual clues to infer the meaning of challenging new words.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Strathfield Council Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Ambrose Catholic Primary School.
