I think to be able to cater to each sutdent individually is the most important thing a tutor can do. Each student learns and processes information differently. By understanding this the tutor can adapt their teaching style to suit that of the student. I think my experience in my job and as a student now studying teaching, I have the skills to be a…

a tutor has to understand how their students think. because every student has different thinking and level of understanding for one question. by knowing that, we can easily help students understand that question well. however, we need to teach by imagining that we are the students. so, we need to be patient and efficient to reach their…

A tutor should provide what a teacher can't. There is a reason that students seek tutoring, and it is therefore a tutor's role to meet their needs. I believe patience is the most important thing. Not everyone thinks the same, and its important for a tutor to understand this, and to move at a pace that suits the student, whilst also challenging…

active communication will enable the tutor to understand the student's issues, strengths, weaknesses, and effectively plan the lessons for student's need. In addition to that, a clear and simplified explanation of subjects will not only enable understanding of the topic, but also could develop an interest of the subject in the student. Once the…

It is important for tutors to explain the concept in a way that gives the student true understanding rather than just a shortcut for test questions. This way the student can apply that knowledge to different situations. I've tutored my younger siblings throughout school so I'm good at working with kids who like to complain that it's too hard. I'm…

Passion and patience will always come up first. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, provide clarity on challenging concepts, and, most importantly, inspire a genuine curiosity to learn more. Strictly in terms of ATAR, to help students do and understand past exams so when the real exams come, they would feel less stressed and more "at home" with the topics being examined, whilst being able to manage time well due to them having done similar past exam questions as routine. But in terms of tutoring, actually helping the student…

Inside DalkeithTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Phoebe worked on mastering organic chemistry concepts like using the periodic table to draw molecules and distinguish between polar and non-polar substances, as well as refining scientific writing skills for her assignment by focusing on terminology, referencing, and grammar.

Another Year 11 student completed revision in biology for an upcoming test and then shifted to practicing vectors, covering vector operations and applications.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student consolidated understanding of linear equations and their graphs using practice questions, also revisiting probability and statistics topics in preparation for assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student working on financial mathematics was encouraged to "try do his own findings on loans," highlighting a need for greater independence in researching and applying concepts beyond guided lessons.

In Year 10, one tutor noted, "he does most of his problem solving mentally," which meant key algebraic steps were left unwritten—making errors harder to spot or correct.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student still made small calculation mistakes when she didn't line up numbers carefully during addition and subtraction; messy layout slowed her progress and increased confusion during worded problems.

Recent Achievements

One Dalkeith tutoring session saw a high school student, Cooper, move from struggling with interest calculations to confidently working through problems on his own after some targeted practice.

In another case, Phoebe (Year 11 Chemistry) started out unsure where her knowledge gaps were, but she independently identified what needed revisiting and even adopted new study habits like reading aloud—something she hadn't tried before.

Meanwhile, Tilly in Year 4 had been hesitant with times tables, but now answers questions for the 4s and 7s quickly even when asked in random order.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dalkeith Primary School.
