At a foundational level, it's most important to ensure the student feels confident with the material they're learning. As a first step, it's important for a tutor to assist in honing in and helping the student practice so that their skill level matches the basic requirements of the subject. Then the next most important thing a tutor can do for a…

Listen and understand, as well as not rushing them but still applying pressure to their studies, most students lack confidence within themselves, so inspiring confidence within a student is a huge base step to learning. Engaging, listening, understanding as well as being able to problem solve and find unique ways to explain content in order for…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to show them efficient and effective ways of taking notes and studying, giving students detailed feedback and enabling students to reflect and learn from their own work by marking practice assessments and working together. My greatest strengths as a tutor is that I can give on the spot,…

I believe that a tutor's most important job is to build a student's confidence. Most particularly when a student is struggling, building confidence allows them to feel that they can try and fail, which is essential to learning. With more advanced students, confidence allows them to stretch themselves even further. I believe I have developed a…

To learn the nature of the student's mind and how their brain processes information, so that a lesson plan can be tailored to their specific needs. There are many ways an individual can learn, and the most valuable thing a tutor can do is explain the information in a way that connects with the student's own learning capabilities. A tutor must be…

To listen and make the learning experience enjoyable. The best way to learn is to do it in a way that does not stress you out, make it easy to understand. I think my strengths would be my kindness and approachability as well as a real drive to teach. My weakness I would say would probably be haveing a hard time giving negative…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is improve the confidence of a student so that they feel competent and ready, which is a knock on effect from the clarity gained during tutoring sessions. Another important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them gain good study habits with can take them all throughut their education, and…

I genuinely believe that a good Tutor is someone who can provide you with all the tools to grasp a concept- and then have the patience to teach the certain concept in various ways until the student fully comprehends. A great tutor will understand the students needs and worries, and address them in a friendly manner. I am a friendly and…

That is easy. The most important thing is to inspire them and engage their curiosity. To be more interesting than a teacher trying to teach a class, and to show the student /s that learning is beneficial, fun, and not-dreary schoolwork. Gamification can be used here, and exposing the student to new texts above the level they are used to, so as to…

As a tutor, I encourage each student and show patience when something is 'difficult', 'boring', or the student doesn't think they 'are good at this subject'. This includes finding learning methods that will best engage the individual in different situations. 1) Experience in understanding how best to motivate and teach different people, depending…

Inside DallasTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Wellson revised solving simultaneous equations using matrices in maths, and also practiced analytical writing techniques for English assignments.

In Year 11, Abby focused on preparing notes and drafting essays comparing *The Dressmaker* and *The Crucible* for her upcoming English exam, as well as researching career paths and university options.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Wellson worked through advanced maths topics such as transition matrices and steady state matrices while also reviewing feedback from previous English SACs to strengthen his essay structure and exam readiness.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, "frequently forgetting to write down all working out" meant a student lost track of steps when solving algebra problems, making it hard to spot where things went wrong.

For a Year 11 student, missing or inconsistent use of the graphics calculator—after it was stolen— made tackling maths exercises much slower and more frustrating.

In senior English, one student struggled with planning essays and didn't consistently apply teacher feedback, leading to weaker arguments under exam conditions.

As a tutor noted: "Formatting of solutions is less organised than it should be, which makes it harder to follow for future reference."

Recent Achievements

A Dallas tutor recently noticed Oscar, a high school student, now talks through his problem-solving steps aloud and needs far less reassurance than before—he's started using the backchecking method independently instead of asking for constant confirmation.

Abby, also in high school, used to get overwhelmed by essay planning but has begun creating cohesive revision schedules and compiling her own notes for upcoming exams without prompting.

Meanwhile, in a Year 6 session, one student who previously froze on tricky maths questions began writing out all available information first and tried different approaches until finding a solution.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ilim College - Kiewa Campus.
