I find that addressing the finer parts that students find more challenging is essential for a tutor. While students may have already covered the concepts in class, the learning process is often not tailored to their individual needs. A tutors role is to adopt a more personalised approach, taking the time to understand each student’s unique level…

It is also important to provide and maintain continual support to them in order to aid their growing knowledge and ability. My strengths as a tutor are displayed…

A tutor has an integral part of a student's schooling journey. Obviously, a tutor is going to assist students with their academic needs, but there are also other important duties that a tutor must fulfill. From my own experience, I can say that a great tutor seeks to understand the student's ambitions. This includes but is not limited to…

It is highly important to provide the student with a support network in which the student feels confident to ask any questions and feels comfortable. I am able to simplify concepts to the point where a student can easily grasp them. I am also quite patient. If a student doesn't initially understand a concept, I am able to not only explain again…

Primarily, a tutor needs to be someone the student can depend on for sound knowledge of the content. Being a reliable, rational source of information who is able guide their students to effectively learn the content in an engaging but effective way will more often than not end up benefiting the student and help them achieve their goals. Generally…

It can be overwhelming to feel confused or left behind in school which can eventually affect your self-confidence. The tutor can help a student to build confidence as well as help pupil in the study by making them practice on their weak points, as a teacher never judge students weakness but helps them to improve it. A tutor should always express appreciation and pride for improvements shown by the student- no matter how big or small the progress is. A tutor should also be able to point out the strengths and weaknesses of the student particularly in a respectful and encouraging way. Most importantly, building a rapport with the student is crucial so as to…

To really understand where the student is coming from. I believe that a tutor's most important job is to build a student's confidence. Most particularly when a student is struggling, building confidence allows them to feel that they can try and fail, which is essential to learning. With more advanced students, confidence allows them to stretch themselves even further. I believe I have developed a…

As briefly mentioned in the question above, the most important things tutor can do for a student is to not make the experience another class that "drags on". Interacting with the student on a level where he/she can enjoy or be intrigued by the work is essential. To do this, you cannot let the theories from a textbook stay as theories.…

Inside DallasTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Wellson revised solving simultaneous equations using matrices in maths, and also practiced analytical writing techniques for English assignments.

In Year 11, Abby focused on preparing notes and drafting essays comparing *The Dressmaker* and *The Crucible* for her upcoming English exam, as well as researching career paths and university options.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Wellson worked through advanced maths topics such as transition matrices and steady state matrices while also reviewing feedback from previous English SACs to strengthen his essay structure and exam readiness.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, "frequently forgetting to write down all working out" meant a student lost track of steps when solving algebra problems, making it hard to spot where things went wrong.

For a Year 11 student, missing or inconsistent use of the graphics calculator—after it was stolen— made tackling maths exercises much slower and more frustrating.

In senior English, one student struggled with planning essays and didn't consistently apply teacher feedback, leading to weaker arguments under exam conditions.

As a tutor noted: "Formatting of solutions is less organised than it should be, which makes it harder to follow for future reference."

Recent Achievements

A Dallas tutor recently noticed Oscar, a high school student, now talks through his problem-solving steps aloud and needs far less reassurance than before—he's started using the backchecking method independently instead of asking for constant confirmation.

Abby, also in high school, used to get overwhelmed by essay planning but has begun creating cohesive revision schedules and compiling her own notes for upcoming exams without prompting.

Meanwhile, in a Year 6 session, one student who previously froze on tricky maths questions began writing out all available information first and tried different approaches until finding a solution.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ilim College - Kiewa Campus.
