Beyond improving test scores or grades, a tutor should inspire a love for learning and independence to carve their success. I believe that a tutor should prioritise building a student's confidence, encouraging them to approach challenges with a positive outlook. As I have recently graduated, my strengths lie in my ability to resonate with my…

Understand what the student is struggling with and help with an exclusive technique to best help them. A generalised approach to help students understand concepts is very ineffective as each individual is different. A tutor must have excellent interpersonal skills to understand how a particular student learns and works to provide them with…

The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student first. I acknowledge the capability and learning pattern of the student and adapt according to their needs. I build a great rapport with them and try to motivate them throughout the learning process. I believe that anyone can sit and speak facts but, it is a good tutor who makes…

Study the student and know his or her pros and cons. I would say master the pros whilst teaching the pros. Divide the activities and show the student that learning isn't a burden its much of a relief at the end of the day because goals can be reached easier once you know better. I have done public speaking for as long as I can remember, so theres…

Not only unraveling inquiries on schoolwork, I believe it is important for them to understand the concepts behind a text or maths questions, such as correlated themes of a text. By offering a new perspective to students, a tutor does need a high level of patience to answer further questions. A tutor should also give honest feedback and encourage…

One of the major thing a tutor can provide to its students is motivation to achieve their tasks. Personally I performed very well in school and college because of my tutor who used to teach me. For the majority of students I have met, a large proportion approach their studies disinterested. Thus, the tutor’s most crucial responsibility is not only to effectively convey the subject matter, it is to do it in a way which sparks engagement. This extends further for theoretical subjects such as chemistry, where the tutor assumes a greater…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student include fostering true understanding of the material, rather than just memorisation, by breaking down complex concepts into digestible parts. Be friendly to the student, show the student that they are confident in them, allow the student to think for him/herself. A tutor should make the student understand the importance of anything they teach the student ,and make sure the student has grasped the concept in the most simplest way to the student. A tutor should understand that each…

Firstly, being kind, patient and listening to the student matters the most. This is because not everyone is the same, not everyone has the same capacity to understand and grasp the concept. One student may understand it in a minute, whereas another may take 10. So its very important that the tutor is kind, patient and listens to the student.…

I believe that a tutor must be flexible and patient, as all students' needs are different. They have to be persistent and encouraging, and make sure that any success is emphasised and also improved upon. The tutor should not only help the student to understand their coursework, but also help them to implement their own study plans and methods, so…

Equip them with the ability to eventually solve problems independently. At the end of the day, the role of tutoring is to help students foster independent thinking so they can overcome academic challenges on their own, because being self-sufficient is important. Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

Very pleased with the tutoring and will definitely recommend to family and friends,

Inside DandenongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ayaan worked on adding and comparing decimals, then moved to a practice test focused on basic algebraic expressions.

Year 8 student Zara tackled statistics by finding mean, median, mode, and range using real data sets, followed by interpreting stem-and-leaf plots.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Michael prepared for an upcoming algebra assessment by creating linear equations from graphs and exploring intercepts through targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete assigned homework, which limited their grasp of recent algebra content—"needs to work on completing homework assigned by tutor to be able to get a better grasp of knowledge."

In Year 11, time management in assessments was a challenge; extra minutes were spent searching through notes instead of solving problems directly.

One Year 7 learner hesitated when facing multi-step worded questions, sometimes pausing midway and doubting their approach despite knowing the method.

When asked to show working for area calculations, another student initially struggled but responded after prompting, showing the impact that process habits have on confidence during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Dandenong tutor noticed Haylee, a high school student, has started writing her own notes more effectively and now uses them when tackling test questions—something she hesitated to do before.

In another session, Elma (also in high school) was able to work through most practice test problems independently after previously needing regular prompting.

Meanwhile, Amelia from Year 7 remembered how to convert units accurately for the first time without hints, having struggled with this step earlier in the term.

Last week, Haylee finished an entire worksheet applying new techniques on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dandenong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dandenong Primary School.
