I believe that a tutor is not there to chastise and 'drill' concepts into a student's mind. The best thing that a tutor can do for their student is to create a positive, uplifting and supportive learning environment. This ensures that students feel comfortable to learn and improve so that they can approach their mistakes not with self-doubt and a…

This means understanding the strengths of their students and helping them leverage those strengths while also giving them useful resources to work on their weaker areas to achieve good results. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be reliable and on time, understand the way in which they learn, whether it is visually or through detailed descriptions and providing the skills on how to get to an answer rather simply giving a student the answer. In my personal opinion besides teaching a student what is in the unit/study guide, a tutor should be taking responsibility in creating a fun learning environment and encouraging and motivating the students to be confident. I feel as though the most important thing a tutor can provide for a student is patience, as being easily angered by a student who may be struggling will result in a negative learning environment which prevents progression, as well as destroying the student\'s confidence and mental health. Ensuring they do not feel overwhelmed when teaching, it is very important to understand the person you are tutoring to allow for effective teaching without rushing or over complicating an area. You need to be able to go at a pace they understand, and can thus project properly what they have learnt. This will ensure optimal knowledge gets retained…

Be patient with them, and always encourage them in every situation. If they're struggling don't get frustrated because they're probably already frustrated themselves, but rather stay patient and positive minded and see if there's another way that may help them better understand the content. Inside DerrimutTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Emma revised quadratic equations and functions, focusing on graph interpretation and problem-solving; Year 10 student Lucas tackled trigonometry by graphing sine and cosine functions, along with a review of transformations to strengthen his foundation; meanwhile, Year 3 student Zoe practiced multiplication facts and solved word problems involving money using real-life scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Mathematics, one student was "a bit lax with her homework," leading to missed practice on application questions and slower progress in trigonometry graphing.

In a senior English session, skipping questions when unsure meant some tasks were left incomplete and unattempted until prompted.

A Year 5 learner's written work was described as "hard to follow," with untidy layout making it difficult to check for errors—especially in multi-step problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student repeatedly avoided challenging multiplication questions, returning only to familiar material and requiring frequent reminders to persist when tasks became unfamiliar or effortful.

Recent Achievements

One Derrimut tutor noted a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess at problems but now regularly asks for help when stuck, especially during complex homework—she completed nearly all tasks this week and initiated questions on her own.

A high schooler in Year 9 has started challenging herself by choosing harder questions for practice, getting them right on recent assignments after previously sticking only to basics.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled to recite times tables can now confidently recall them aloud without prompting and tackled double-digit multiplication with less support than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Derrimut Primary School.
