I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to provide clear explanations, foster a positive learning environment, and build a student's confidence. It’s crucial to break down complex concepts into manageable steps, ensuring students understand the material thoroughly. Equally important is creating a supportive space where students…

Be prepared for a lesson, be interested, explain things properly and clearly, make sure they actually understand and aren't just saying 'yes', allowing them to work through some tasks themselves. I think I am good at explaining and communicating. I am also quite down to earth, so I think that it is easy to ask me any questions.…

To a greater extent success depends on the students` commitment to their studies, not as much what we as tutors do. The most important thing a tutor can do is engage a student in the material, so that students can independently go the extra mile. My strengths are that I can think and respond quickly in altering lesson plans, I have had to take…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to deepen/ignite their interest in the area which they are teaching or make a student come to love a subject they struggled with before. Furthermore, as a tutor, I feel that helping a student build a strong foundation of knowledge is important as future knowledge they learn would…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make sure that the student feels comfortable and safe while being taught. This is so that they have an easier time learning the information rather than being constantly stressed out. I also think, as a tutor we should put in the effort to analyse in which type of learning the student…

Changing a student's attitude to enjoy the subject and want to learn more about the subject is definitely the most important thing a great tutor can do. One of the most crucial things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is to support and encourage them academically while also helping them become more self-assured and independent. Creating a supportive learning atmosphere where students feel free to ask questions, make errors, and advance at their own pace is just as important as imparting…

Active listening. I believe this is the most important trait and thing a tutor can do for a student. This is because our role is to educate and a way of guiding students to take in information in the best or most efficient way, and part of that is listening actively to what the student wants out of tutoring sessions and adjusting however possible…

A tutor is someone who has been in the students' shoes and outgrown them. Throughout the tutor's journey through school, they gain knowledge and strategies which assist them through assessments. Although simply passing on the knowledge of the syllabus is important and an essential part of tutoring, it is the strategies regarding techniques of…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to help them develop a strong sense of confidence in their abilities. The most important thing a tutor can do is understand a student. Tutoring without understanding the student is similar to filling a closed bottle, It's of no use. So First understand the student, understand everyone is unique and everyone has a different pace to grab the things. To deliver things in the way that they need will eventually decrease…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen, understand, and adapt their approach to tutoring in order to cater to the needs of the tutee. Listen, I believe as a tutor the most important thing to do is listen to what the student has to say, whether it is problems, curiosities, or more. Tutoring is not primarily about teaching but supporting and trying to understand the children for who they are. Different students have different ways of learning as well as ways they feel comfortable…

Local Reviews

Knowledgeable and supportive, patient and great communication skills
Khalida, Doncaster East

Inside Doncaster EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava practised long division with remainders and explored onomatopoeias to strengthen both numeracy and creative language skills.

For Year 8, Lily worked through textbook review questions in measurement, focusing on applying Pythagoras' theorem to find missing side lengths in right-angled triangles.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Daniel concentrated on trigonometry by identifying which trigonometric ratio (sine, cosine, or tangent) to use when solving for unknown angles or sides in various problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Biology, a student avoided making her own notes on cellular respiration, which meant key details (like inputs/outputs) were not fully memorised; as one tutor noted, "she needs to create her own notes to help with memorisation."

Meanwhile, in Year 9 Maths, another student relied heavily on mental calculations for algebra and skipped writing out steps—when mistakes happened, it became difficult to spot where things went wrong.

A Year 7 student sometimes struggled to identify what the question was asking in worded problems and spent extra time working backwards rather than building a clear process first.

Recent Achievements

One Doncaster East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to attempt harder algebra questions now works through complex inequalities independently, giving every question a try and getting them right.

In VCE Biology, another high school student who used to rely heavily on hints now confidently explains each stage of photosynthesis without prompting and answers new cellular respiration questions accurately.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, a younger learner who once mixed up coin values can now count $5 and $10 notes correctly while adding up change, finishing her money exercises with no help needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Pines Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Donburn Primary School.
