Finding other ways of working out a problem. If something has been said and isn’t ‘going in’ we can try a visual approach or written down approach, whatever works for the student . Being patient I think is very important, not getting frustrated with the student and using positive language, for example ‘good try’ or ‘nearly there’.…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are build trust, encourage genuine confidence, and teach students how to learn independently. It's not just about helping them get through one subject or assignment, it's about giving them the skills and self-belief they can carry with them into everything else they do. I think my main strengths…

I believe the most important thing about a tutor is being able to provide self-confidence for the student. I do this through encouragement catered both individually and to the group (if there is one). I have found that when students believe they have the ability to complete the question, they are more likely to ask questions and understand the…

This is critical during examination season where it tests the ability of students, with enough practice and making sure that students understands key concepts through tests and questions prepares the students in advance for a test. This has not only allowed me to excel in my studies but has also filled my life with joy and wonder at the many things there are to learn and understand. This was given to me by my teachers and parents, and I think this is the best gift a teacher of any kind can give to a student. I have a solid…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them because the student is the one who knows what they're struggling with and they are the ones who are going to tell me what they need to learn. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to let them go wild in their creativity, and act as more of a meander along a river's edge, guiding it in the right direction, than a dam trying to hold the water in. I believe I am very receptive as a tutor, and will be available to a student no matter the topic. I love fostering human…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student genuinely understand the subject rather than simply giving them answers. A good tutor should identify where the student is struggling, explain concepts clearly, encourage them to think independently, and build their confidence over time. Helping students improve or maintain their grades, along with teaching extremely valuable lessons is the most important thing I can do for a student. Inside Double BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Eva focused on finding the area of triangles and converting tricky fractions to decimals, using worked examples for clarity.

In Year 7, Emmanuel tackled review questions on expressions, equations, and inequalities while also refining his problem-solving approach as misconceptions arose.

Meanwhile, Year 3 student Isaac practiced multiplication with emphasis on the 2 and 3 times tables and spent time reading analogue clocks to reinforce understanding of time.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Chemistry student hesitated with back titration and struggled to express key ideas clearly—"she was unable to phrase this concept succinctly and with clarity," noted her tutor. This meant exam responses were incomplete or vague, affecting marks.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student's test performance suffered from weak time management; she often left questions unfinished.

In Year 4, over-reliance on counting boards slowed basic addition and subtraction, making it hard to move beyond simple sums without aids.

For a Year 8 student, skipping steps when rearranging equations led to confusion in algebra tasks and lost working marks.

Recent Achievements

One Double Bay tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who had previously struggled with pH calculations manage to work through multi-step problems independently after some targeted practice, even explaining the difference between strong and weak polyprotic acids.

In Year 8 chemistry, another student who was hesitant with solubility rules last week was able to solve multi-part questions on her own after extra explanation.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 3 has started checking her addition answers by counting in fives—a big shift from past weeks when she wouldn't suggest ways to self-check at all.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Double Bay Public School.
