I think the most important things that a tutor and do for a student is to convey the idea that learning should be fun, regardless of whether the process of solving a problem is easy or complex. Being able to enjoy the process of problem solving can go beyond the classroom. Making it enjoyable for the students is critical for any successful tutor.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is to teach the student how to think critically and laterally about the problems they face. My strengths as a tutor are definitely that while I don't push the students too hard I also don't just give them the answers. I give them the tools they need to work out the answers and…

To be there for a student in a more personal and approachable way than the modern education system and its teachers can be, to help 'fill in the gaps' that the student may have missed in class and to be there for the student if they feel like the education system has failed them. Too many schools focus on the groups needs rather than the…

Tutors must foster growth, independence, and a goal-oriented mindset so that each student can strive to overcome learning challenges, recognise their milestones, and identify any incompetencies in their work. This will ultimately strengthen their academic confidence, and allow students to grow from their mistakes. I have been able to adapt to a…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with equity throughout their peers and the greater school community. A tutor can be the confidence of the subject for a student. The attitude of the tutor reflects the interest of the students to focus on their lessons. A tutor must provide a friendly environment to students so that they are calm and composed while doing their lessons I am very patient and can explain the same things on a repetitive basis. Very…

An effective tutor can make a student feel more confident and engaged with the learning process. They can make students excited to learn new concepts and to challenge themselves, rather than shying away from these challenges. Marks can be important, particularly for older students, and are a tangible outcome for students to measure their…

To increase a students confidence and ability. Its also important for a tutor to teach students how to study independently. I think a tutor should provide a fun, engaging and different approach to studying. A tutor should ask questions in a way a teacher hasn't got the time to do. They should always ask what the student wants and implement strategies as to how to attain these goals. But, perhaps at the forefront of responsibility, a tutor should always make sure the…

A good tutor needs to have a variety of qualities in order to bring out the best in a student. Tutors need to be able to personalize learning, no two students learn the same and as such it would be incorrect to assume that the same teaching strategy will work for every student. Tutors should also not simply teach content to students, they need to…

I consider making the tutoring session a relaxed, relatively casual setting as one of the most important things a tutor can do. Inside East CorrimalTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex worked through algebraic inequalities and financial maths questions, focusing on real-world applications and significant figures.

In Year 9, Jamie practised finding the perimeter of sectors in coordinate geometry and strengthened understanding of linear relationships by plotting equations on graphs.

For Year 6, Remi revised multiplication and division skills with targeted homework support and rapid-fire mixed operations to build confidence and accuracy.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, one student avoided reading assigned texts and preferred only familiar genres, limiting his ability to tackle upcoming school essays.

During a Year 10 Maths session, "he was reluctant to show working out on some of his maths questions," which could hide calculation errors and make revision harder.

In junior years, another student's written work was often messy and disorganized—particularly with fractions—making it difficult for him to track steps or revisit corrections.

For a Year 7 History assignment, heavy reliance on tutor guidance meant independent research and writing skills were not developed, leaving him frustrated after repeated attempts.

Recent Achievements

One East Corrimal tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 9 student who used to freeze when faced with tough algebra and Pythagoras problems; now, he asks clarifying questions and works through triangle sums independently.

In a senior session, another student showed initiative by requesting extra help on coordinate geometry equations, having previously waited for the tutor to guide every step.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with reading aloud at the start of term recently read an excerpt out loud from "School for Good and Evil" without stumbling—something he'd avoided before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corrimal District Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Corrimal High School.
