I think the most important things a tutor can do are make learning clear and build a student’s confidence. A tutor should help students become more independent in their learning and also be there whenever they require us. My strengths as a tutor are patience, adaptability, and clear communication. I can break down complex ideas into simple steps…

It is important to provide constructive feedback in a way that they understand and feel motivated to act on. Understanding a students personality makes tutoring more effective, as it allows me…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help students build real confidence in their ability to take tests and trust what they know. Its not just about content, but helping them feel calm, prepared, and capable so they can actually perform under pressure. My strengths as a tutor are my genuine passion for teaching, my ability to break down…

Encouragement and patience. Through personal experience, even if the student improve their score by 1% from their last test, this is enough of an encouragement for them to push harder and let them know you will be their for them anytime when they are stuck or needing help. I can sympathise very well with the students since most of the time I know…

Teachers are considered as one of the people who shape someone's future or career. By giving good pieces of advice by basing myself on my personal experience as a student, I'll make sure that the student is always on the right track. I'll try to inspire students regularly by for example talking about awesome stuffs in science and maths which would…

Having compassion. Being proficient in a subject does not guarantee that the student will understand as deeply as the tutor. Sometimes, techniques won't work, or the student may have problems outside of academics. Being compassionate will outweigh any other things that a tutor can do at the end of the day. I am able to compartmentalize well, and…

I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

To allow the student to learn by guiding them there. This way, I believe students are able to improve even after you’ve stopped tutoring them. In short, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be for tutors to ensure that students are confident in how they approach a problem. My strengths as a tutor, I would say,…

A tutor or a teacher builds his student's knowledge, clears any misconceptions if he have, clears their sight between right and wrong behaviors, help them to achieve their learning goals and to decide what they want to be in future. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

To be honest, an excellent tutor needs to be able to assist students in meeting deadlines. Delivering instruction that gives students the tools they need to be more independent in their studies is as vital, though. Liz, Elwood

Inside ElwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Frankie practised solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, as well as reviewing strategies for tackling measurement and geometry revision questions.

In Year 10, Isla focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions, alongside strengthening her understanding of negative numbers through step-by-step practice.

For Year 12, Alice completed a detailed review of matrix division and the identity matrix before moving on to advanced applications with transition matrices in preparation for upcoming assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A significant amount of knowledge...was lost over the last week due to incompletion of homework for a Year 11 student who missed assignments on credit card and interest problems, resulting in noticeable gaps during a weekly quiz.

In VCE English, another student arrived with only half their assigned essay finished, citing busy SAC periods but not communicating in advance.

For a Year 12 mathematics lesson, skipping careful reading meant important details in compound interest questions were overlooked, requiring repeated correction.

Meanwhile, one junior secondary student relied heavily on step-by-step memorisation for algebra instead of developing conceptual understanding, which slowed progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Elwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with matrix operations—she's now creating her own process for multiplication and tackling advanced transition matrices almost independently.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student who struggled with algebra is expanding brackets more accurately and now works through negative numbers with less prompting than before.

In English, Will (Year 12) has started asking for new vocabulary during sessions and independently picks out errors in his writing—a big step up from earlier weeks when he'd avoid revising drafts.

Last session, he submitted his homework on time and complete.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Columba's School.
