The willingness to help and to commit time, energy, and patience. If the tutor is doing for the sake of doing, it shows the lack of commitment. I truly believe that teaching is a passion-driven job. Students will know your desire and commitment. One of my strength is my willingness to go down to the students' level rather than expecting the…

I believe the 3 most important things a tutor can do for a student is: 1. being fluent with the content, 2. giving moral support when necessary and 3. create a sort of friendship with the student. I think my biggest strength as a tutor is to be able to teach via understanding content rather then rope learning, which i think is an imperative…

A teacher needs to be friendly, interactive at the same time authoritarian in a positive way. A teacher cannot do much if a student do not co-operates. Once that happens, the student can excel not only in that subject, but can also approach everything in life with confidence and aptitude. I love teaching - That would be my greatest strength. The most important thing for a tutor is to never underestimate a student, and to be there for them as a support and to show them that they can. If a student loses self esteem and think that they can't do it...they wont. It's all about giving them a healthy mindset which allows them to gain the knowledge given. My biggest strength i believe is how…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is truly be their well-wisher. I think students are coming to tutors because they know they need help. Acknowledging that they took that step, understanding the knowledge base with which they're there, teaching them in easy terms, and creating a long term plan for their studies is the…

A good tutor, besides academic understanding, communication, patience and flexibility are the key aspects. Every student has their own unique learning curve and techniques, it is the tutor's job to discuss with the student and figure out the best way to convey the ideas and give appropriate study load. There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all,…

A good tutor needs to know the content, but more importantly, they need to identify gaps in the student's understanding, even when the students aren't sure where they're struggling. I believe that a tutor should plan individually for each student to cater for their needs. Each student has their own strengths and weaknesses, and it should be the tutor's role to discover these and change their teaching approaches accordingly. A good tutor should be able to encourage the students to overcome setbacks and achieve their best…

Liz, Elwood

Inside ElwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Frankie practised solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, as well as reviewing strategies for tackling measurement and geometry revision questions.

In Year 10, Isla focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions, alongside strengthening her understanding of negative numbers through step-by-step practice.

For Year 12, Alice completed a detailed review of matrix division and the identity matrix before moving on to advanced applications with transition matrices in preparation for upcoming assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A significant amount of knowledge...was lost over the last week due to incompletion of homework for a Year 11 student who missed assignments on credit card and interest problems, resulting in noticeable gaps during a weekly quiz.

In VCE English, another student arrived with only half their assigned essay finished, citing busy SAC periods but not communicating in advance.

For a Year 12 mathematics lesson, skipping careful reading meant important details in compound interest questions were overlooked, requiring repeated correction.

Meanwhile, one junior secondary student relied heavily on step-by-step memorisation for algebra instead of developing conceptual understanding, which slowed progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Elwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with matrix operations—she's now creating her own process for multiplication and tackling advanced transition matrices almost independently.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student who struggled with algebra is expanding brackets more accurately and now works through negative numbers with less prompting than before.

In English, Will (Year 12) has started asking for new vocabulary during sessions and independently picks out errors in his writing—a big step up from earlier weeks when he'd avoid revising drafts.

Last session, he submitted his homework on time and complete.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Columba's School.
