Give time, especially more before the exam. This is because that is the time when most of the problems about the subject come out. Also, the tutor needs to make sure that the student understood the topic. The tutor should be willing to explain the topic as many times as the students want to. I can adapt very quickly. I put myself in the shoes of…

So as a tutor, we have too teach the students in a simple way such that they can easily understand the concepts and they can apply that in real life. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students build confidence in their learning. Many students already have the ability to succeed but just need someone to guide them and explain things in a way that makes sense. A good tutor should be supportive, patient, and willing to adapt to the student’s learning style. It’s also…

To provide support in a one on one fashion is extremely valuable. Having extra tools and strategies to tackle questions can only increase ones confidence, which is to say, a tutor can provide what is not always provided in the classroom. It is ultimately this process of developing more confidence and independence in learning that is crucial to…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

A tutor must make themselves approachable and be a role model figure to their students. As someone they have a more personalized time space with compared to their school teachers, the students are often likely to look up to their tutors as figures of inspiration and personal ceilings. It is our duty as these figures to not just live up to their…

I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is guide a student. Just watering is not enough but should help the students to grow his roots so that the student grasps the concepts not just answer some previously seen examples. Inside EssendonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia worked on mean, median, and mode in statistics as well as interpreting and constructing stem-and-leaf plots.

In Year 10, Jack focused on graphing sine and cosine functions along with exploring transformations of trigonometric graphs using sketching techniques.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia reviewed derivatives and stationary points before practicing different methods to find maximum and minimum values in calculus contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Physics, a student found it challenging to relate work and energy concepts—"developing the intuition to relate work to change in energy" remained a sticking point when applying formulas in new problems.

For Year 12 Maths, time management in multiple-choice sections became an issue; as noted, "extra minutes were lost re-checking easy questions instead of tackling harder ones."

A Year 7 student's written maths work was often messy and confusing: "formatting on the page, he confuses himself," leading to misplaced numbers during algebra steps.

In primary years, one student's frustration with fractions led to moments where motivation dropped and progress stalled mid-lesson.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon tutor noticed a Year 11 student who had been hesitant with trigonometric graph transformations now independently sketches trig functions and solves transformed equations, something he'd previously avoided without guidance.

A Year 8 student who struggled to organise writing has started using a wider range of sentence starters and now structures essays more clearly, no longer repeating the same phrases.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student recently read and entered data into a stem-and-leaf plot on his own for the first time—he even calculated mean, median, and range without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sam Merrifeld (Essendon) Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Penleigh & Essendon Grammar School - Essendon Campus.
