If they present themselves to students as approachable and knowledgeable, then students will feel comfortable asking questions and also feel ready to trust in the supportive answers and feedback a tutor gives. I trust that everyone who feels comfortable to apply to be a…

An important thing would be to instil a sense of confidence in a student about a particular subject, theory, or whatever it is that they are struggling with. Without confidence, even if a student may know the content or understand the theory, it can be difficult to do well in that subject. This is achieved by repeating a concept or practising it a…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them to feel confident with the task in front of them. An effective tutor will break down the concept, slowly explaining this to the student, making sure they are following each step along the way. Once the student has grasped the concept and feel confident with it, they will be…

A tutor should use as simple language as possible because using fancy language can make them loose interest as they won't know the words. A tutor should involve the students into the discussion so that they don't sleep off during the session. From my years of soccer coaching experience, where I worked to improve the skills of a dozen different players of different levels, I learned that every student learns best in their own way and that is why tutoring is so important. In the classroom, everyone receives the same treatment and it is bound to be ineffective for many people. Thus, the…

To listen and make the learning experience enjoyable. The best way to learn is to do it in a way that does not stress you out, make it easy to understand. That is easy. The most important thing is to inspire them and engage their curiosity. To be more interesting than a teacher trying to teach a class, and to show the student /s that learning is beneficial, fun, and not-dreary schoolwork. Gamification can be used here, and exposing the student to new texts above the level they are used to, so as to…

It was incredibly easy to get started with EzyMath Tutoring. A couple of clicks, a phone call and we were in business! My son's tutor is great - he is showing my son lots of alternative strategies and is highlighting areas for practice before their next session. I know measurable results will take time but we are happy with the progress thus far. And, more importantly, my son is feeling more confident and engaged in math class.

Inside Essendon NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Aiden worked through converting fractions to decimals and solving percentage problems, focusing on clear step-by-step calculations.

In Year 11, Ethan tackled linear motion and gravitational motion in Physics, including rearranging formulae to solve for unknowns.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Lara concentrated on Special Relativity concepts in Physics and practiced applying electromagnetic induction principles to real-world scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Physics and Maths, one student repeatedly relied on formula sheets for even basic questions and struggled to connect formulas with real-world meanings. "He still just sees a formula as the thing you use to plug values in," a tutor noted after an interest rate problem, leading to confusion when unfamiliar wording appeared.

In Year 10, missing or jumbled working steps caused errors—skipping writing out calculations led to lost numbers during matrix problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner's tendency to sprawl working across the page resulted in confusion mid-way through multi-step perimeter tasks; details were missed or units mixed up.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon North tutoring session saw a high school student, Alex, who previously struggled to identify which formulas to use in finance and matrix problems, now tackling complex questions independently and rarely making calculation errors.

Another win came when Matthew, also in high school, showed real initiative by completing extra work on amortisation tables—something he'd found confusing before—and could explain the difference between nominal and effective interest rates without prompting.

Meanwhile, Ella in Year 6 moved from hesitating over worded inequality problems to confidently solving them after working through a hands-on example with pencils and pens.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Essendon North Primary School.
