By doing this, you build a strong yet professional relationship with the student, where there is mutual respect and trust. Firstly, building confidence is crucial, as it helps students believe in their abilities and improves their performance. Individualised learning is also important as tailoring lessons to meet each student's unique needs and learning styles ensures they grasp concepts effectively. I also think fostering a love for learning, making education…

MENTOR/TUTOR It is important that tutors have a friendly approach to students and make sure that students set a goal for every lesson. The most important thing a tutor can do would be to personalise the study plan and instruction to ensure that the student's weaknesses and strengths are being addressed and to have the patience to explain concepts repeatedly if the student doesn't understand it at first. Often times, students seek outside tutoring as they feel the help they…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for students is to improve their confidence in their own abilities. Having confidence will equip them with the key tools to deal with fears and self-doubts, which are things that can significantly hinder the learning process. To do this, a tutor has to provide encouragements to students along…

Inside Fairfield HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Andrew worked through different subtraction strategies and tackled word problems involving money, as well as breaking numbers into tens and ones to start the topic of length using tables.

In Year 9, Ethan focused on solving equations with brackets on both sides and practiced algebraic fraction equations, then moved into identifying trigonometric ratios in triangles.

For Year 10, Jade revised quadratic equations—using factorising—and worked with surface area and volume by calculating perimeters and areas for composite shapes such as rectangles and triangles.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a recurring issue across several years.

For example, a Year 9 student "attempted homework minutes before our session—only half was completed, the rest forgotten."

In senior levels, students preparing for trigonometry or algebra tests sometimes left revision incomplete, leading to last-minute stress and gaps in recall ("was only notified during class that a yearly exam was occurring tomorrow").

Fatigue and lack of motivation were common in Years 10–12, with one tutor noting, "He was very tired and lost focus multiple times; homework was not attempted."

Missed assignments often meant less time spent on feedback and consolidation.

Recent Achievements

One Fairfield Heights tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask for clarification now comfortably brings up questions during lessons, making it easier to address misunderstandings on the spot.

In Year 8 maths, a student managed to complete all their homework this week and caught most of their earlier errors without prompting—something they struggled with last term.

Meanwhile, a primary school student finally worked through subtraction strategies independently after weeks of needing step-by-step guidance; this time, he finished the worksheet on his own without waiting for hints from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Smithfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Gertrude's Catholic Primary School.
