Most important thing I believe a tutor can do for a student is to influence the student to become more ambitious and help them learn things quickly and in a more smarter way. Ability to understand each student's calibre and teach according to it in a simpler and friendly…

Understanding the student is the most primary thing. Without understanding the student you can explain him an entire Library and the student will still be an illiterate or at worse develop fear or disinterest in learning. Connection, understanding, acknowledging and tailoring my approach towards each individual who's different from the…

Promote an excitement to learn. I think if a tutor can make the students feel motivated by the learning process, the content of their subjects becomes easier to digest and contextualise I am an excellent communicator, allowing me to understand the roadblocks that a student may be facing in their learning. I also believe my personal relationship…

As a tutor, I believe the core priority is to support the student’s learning in the most effective and personalised way possible. Building a student’s confidence is just as important as helping them achieve higher marks, as the two often go hand in hand. Having experienced the benefits of tutoring myself in high school, I understand firsthand…

Inside Fern BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Tyler focused on adding and subtracting decimals as well as rounding numbers, then progressed to multiplying decimals and preparing for a maths grading exam using his school booklet.

A Year 10 student revised financial maths concepts including depreciation, shares and dividend yield, and practised solving questions on simple and compound interest.

For Year 9, recent sessions covered interpreting box-and-whisker plots and quartiles in data analysis, alongside strategies for reading graphs accurately.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student's maths workbook was described as "a little more organised and tidy but we will work on that for next year," reflecting issues with written layout and presentation.

In senior years, a recurring theme has been over-reliance on formulas—one tutor observed, "she is too reliant on putting numbers into a given formula," particularly in financial mathematics.

Several high school students, including in Extension 1, tended to avoid writing out their working or explaining their reasoning aloud, making it difficult to identify errors early. This often led to confusion when faced with less familiar question formats.

Recent Achievements

In a recent Fern Bay tutoring session, Danika took the initiative to organise her questions ahead of time, something she didn't do at the start of the year. Now, she routinely highlights topics she's unsure about and brings them up in lessons, which means less hesitation and more active problem-solving.

Liz has started tackling difficult financial maths exam questions without waiting for hints—she works through each step on paper and even explains her reasoning out loud if challenged.

Meanwhile, Lara confidently completed a new linear equations question by herself after struggling with independent attempts earlier in the term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stockton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fern Bay Public School.
