As a tutor, the most important things a tutor can do is to help student build confidence and motivation for learning and achieving their academic goals. Tutors should also encourage independent learning such as setting goals, taking notes and time management as it will be useful throughout their studies. A good tutor can identify and address…

To be consoling and confident, so that the student believes in you. To have a very good relationship with the student is an important key because it releases the stress on the student-tutor barrier, which is important especially during learning. Additionally, to motivate the student in achieving intellectual barriers. I am a people person as i am…

Become a role model and help inspire them to become the best version of themselves. I want to be someone who can help them expand their horizon for learning. And understand that maths and science isn't their enemy. Studying isn't their enemy. I feel what's most important is being an educator not a grader. Patience, and repetition, never…

In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. I am self-directed, energetic, and enthusiastic. I have completed my Bachelor of Engineering + Management…

A tutor's role goes beyond teaching academic content. Creating a positive learning environment, adapting to diverse learning styles, and offering clear explanations are crucial. A tutor should be more than just a teacher to them, they should be their friend, their go-to person in case of doubts and someone who's always willing to listen while…

In my opinion, the most important things a tutor can do for a student would be to build confidence and make learning approachable according to the learning style of the student. A tutor should be able to create a safe space where mistakes are okay and questions are encouraged. A tutor should guide the students to discover the answers rather than…

The most important thing is the tutor will be a friend to the student without actually being a friend. The magic lies here. The mentality that I never give up. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel supported and confident. A lot of students actually understand more than they think, but they might be anxious, unsure, or afraid of making mistakes. So I see my role as creating a space where they feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace. Another…

I think it is crucial that tutors listen and work with students to find the best ways in which they learn, rather than trying a one-size-fits-all method. This also involves adapting resources and teaching styles to best fit the student. I am enthusiastic and have a passion for learning, which I think comes across when I tutor and helps students to…

Bring them a new way to approach problems, and help them overcome the fear of giving wrong answers or asking what they might consider "dumb questions," because there are no such things as dumb questions. 100% Motivation and ensuring they feel like they have a support structure whose best interest is to see them succeed. The most important thing any sort of teacher or mentor can do for not just students, but anyone, is to make sure the students believe in themselves and their abilities, for that will take them beyond any test or assignment. Taking their time to explain a method or topic properly in a way that the students understand. I think this is important because if the students don't clearly understand the process in which they need to apply it, then the method isn't useful. But that method is not going to be the same for each student My skills would be my patience and…

Inside FlemingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alice worked on calculating mean, median, mode, and range in statistics as well as identifying angles with symmetry using visual examples.

In Year 9, Bita practised solving linear equations and worked through a worksheet on mean, median and mode provided by her teacher.

For Year 10, Laura focused on revising algebra and graphing techniques from the Year 11 curriculum to strengthen her foundation for upcoming studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for a statistics test hesitated to share which probability topics felt hardest, making it difficult to target weak spots; her notebook was also missing dates, so tracking progress became confusing.

In Year 9 algebra, as one tutor put it, "he skipped showing steps in simplification, which hid sign errors"—extra time was then spent hunting mistakes instead of building confidence.

A Year 7 student left homework incomplete before lessons and struggled with organizing exercise books and teacher feedback requests.

During Year 12 revision, reluctance to attempt unfamiliar graph questions led to gaps ahead of the upcoming test.

Recent Achievements

One Flemington tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who used to freeze up on tough algebra questions—now, after working through some challenging Further Maths problems, he confidently explained his reasoning and tackled even the trickiest ones without hesitation.

In another session, a Year 9 student who'd struggled to distinguish between explanatory and response variables was able to clearly verbalise his thought process and correctly identify each one during practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once guessed at answers now talks through her multiplication steps out loud and checks her work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Flemington Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kensington Community High School.
