I consider one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. The role of the tutor is to recognise what the student is capable of doing on their own…

I believe the most important thing for a tutor is to listen to and understand their student's weaknesses and strengths. Often I find many people lack personalisation and simply follow the curriculum. I like to take a different approach where I really personalise my teaching depending on the student's capabilities and learning style. I also find…

Tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. A successful tutors build strong, personal relationships with their students. When tutors focus on goal setting, creating benchmarks and planning backwards, this sets students up for academic progress. When a tutor listens and…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to support them along their learning journey. Learning is not a linear experience and it does take a lot of patience, time, and effort, and as a tutor, it is important to guide and support their student throughout the journey. It is also important to be a mentor and someone that the…

Be being a tutor and mentor, I believe in the below things I do - Get to know each student's learning style and adapt your teaching accordingly. - Explain concepts in a way that's easy to grasp and encourage them to ask questions. - Be patient when they face challenges, and provide support to build their confidence. - Show how the subject…

The most important thing a tutor can impart to her/his student is the ability to motivate. Motivation instills a passion, may it be for the subject taught or the anything beyond school hours, it gives the student a sense of purpose and drives the student to be ambitious. Once a student tells themselves that 'they can do it', there are innumerable…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the tools to be able to confidently work through academic problems on their own. In an English context this can mean teaching a student how to deconstruct what is required by a question, or giving them the skills to analyse a text for thematic and technical…

The most important thing tutoring did for me was providing a deeper understanding of complicated topics that were hard to grasp. It is also important to be someone that the student feels comfortable coming to with help. So by showing understanding and appreciation for their effort, a student doesn't feel concerned for getting an answer wrong of…

Help them to gain back their confidence. I mean from primary to middle school or even high school, the curriculum might be hard but not that hard that students could not pass it. I believe any students are capable of finishing high school with a decent grade. Most students I met were just getting distracted, or not spending their time enough on…

To not give up on students who are less likely capable of understanding. The willingness to go the extra mile to create different ways of perspective for students to understand certain theories or learning. Connecting to the subjects with reality situation as examples. Allowing students to see perspectives not only from books, but also from the…

I believe that building a strong teacher-student relationship is the most important thing. Most students who seek for tutoring are either aiming to break their limits, or catch up with others. Both motivation requires significant support from their peers, thus, as a tutor, building a strong TSR can robustly improve students' learning motivation.…

I think the most important thing is to understand the student's cognitive ability and be able to relate to their world. Giving them examples using whatever they're into, for example, cartoons/video games, in order to teach a concept goes a long way. There isn't a bible when it comes to teaching, it's an evolving process, which gets better over…

For the less motivated students, a tutor can help them gain interest in the subject, which I think is the most important thing for a learner. For most of the students, a tutor should be a guide to lead them to pick up knowledge points bit by bit and finally have a general clear map of them. I am quite good at being with people, no matter what…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to understand the best learning method of their students, and suit the teaching approach to that. This is important because each students have different and sometimes unique effective method of studying, hence a uniform approach of teaching to all students don't always work. This is…

Listen to them and not expect them to understand everything instantly. I feel the most important things a tutor can do: understand the student, make learning fun and clear and build confidence in them. I would first listen to the student, understand where they feel difficult, go along with their pace and make the student do a lot of thinking. Leveling yourself to their level, because if you use words or examples that they understand, you can see the excitement and joy on their faces, to now appreciate the subject you're teaching. I wish to try my best to identify gaps in learning and provide tailored instruction to the students who are struggling. A teacher needs to be friendly, interactive at the same time authoritarian in a positive way. A teacher cannot do much if a student do not co-operates. Taking their time to explain a method or topic properly in a way that the students understand. I think this is important because if the students don't clearly understand the process in which they need to apply it, then the method isn't useful. But that method is not going to be the same for each student My skills would be my patience and…

The best thing a tutor can do to for a student is to get the student interested in the subject so that s/he will be able to not only excel at tests and quizzes in school but also pursue it further. I think the most important things a tutor can do for students are motivating them ,appreciating them and making them more interested towards the subjects . My first lesson with bavadharini was awesome (even my mum was impressed)! It took a test run to get here but I couldn't be more pleased with this system! I look forward to our future lessons together :)

Inside FlemingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alice worked on calculating mean, median, mode, and range in statistics as well as identifying angles with symmetry using visual examples.

In Year 9, Bita practised solving linear equations and worked through a worksheet on mean, median and mode provided by her teacher.

For Year 10, Laura focused on revising algebra and graphing techniques from the Year 11 curriculum to strengthen her foundation for upcoming studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for a statistics test hesitated to share which probability topics felt hardest, making it difficult to target weak spots; her notebook was also missing dates, so tracking progress became confusing.

In Year 9 algebra, as one tutor put it, "he skipped showing steps in simplification, which hid sign errors"—extra time was then spent hunting mistakes instead of building confidence.

A Year 7 student left homework incomplete before lessons and struggled with organizing exercise books and teacher feedback requests.

During Year 12 revision, reluctance to attempt unfamiliar graph questions led to gaps ahead of the upcoming test.

Recent Achievements

One Flemington tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who used to freeze up on tough algebra questions—now, after working through some challenging Further Maths problems, he confidently explained his reasoning and tackled even the trickiest ones without hesitation.

In another session, a Year 9 student who'd struggled to distinguish between explanatory and response variables was able to clearly verbalise his thought process and correctly identify each one during practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once guessed at answers now talks through her multiplication steps out loud and checks her work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Flemington Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kensington Community High School.
