I believe a tutor’s most important role is to be patient and truly understand how each student learns. By breaking down concepts clearly, sharing practical strategies, and creating a supportive and encouraging environment, a tutor can help students gain confidence, retain knowledge, and genuinely enjoy the process of learning. One of my biggest…

First thing is trust, the tutor should be responsible, good listener, and patient; as a result, the student will trust on him and feel more comfortable to learn. Second, the tutor should understand and analyze the student difficulties to create an individual approach for his learning. Therefore, teaching will be an easy way for the tutor and the…

In the short term, help them get over the current difficulties they're facing. But in the long term, help them develop the skills to deal with future difficulties without a tutor being needed. I am very passionate about mathematics. I have a methodically logical mind, but also a lot of appreciation for the beauty of the subject, which I believe I…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the student realize that it's okay to be wrong and try again. But it's never okay to be wrong and not try again and give up. Furthermore, building confidence in the student is a crucial step in order for the student to succeed. I believe my strengths are patience and…

So far so good! All the qualities l was looking for in a tutor l found in Yixuan. My daughter needed the gentle approach because her confidence was flagging in mathematics and Yixuan definitely understood that. Yixuan tried different methods to see what worked best and an easy relationship between tutor and student was established. Yixuan made sure that the math at hand was being understood. Immediately my daughter felt comfortable and was asking questions. I didn't expect such a quick turn around in grades but even better was that her attitude to school in general had perked up. I suppose l didn't realise how much one area in academia could affect other areas of her life experience. Yixuan is an excellent tutor. Even if my daughter may not continue in the math/science field Yixuan has given her what she needs to tread confidently for a while.

Inside Freshwater CreekTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Krisztian worked on multiplying and dividing fractions, as well as converting between simple and complex fractions using homework-based examples.

Year 8 student Mia focused on ratio and rates by dividing given ratios and comparing gradients, along with revision of index laws.

For Year 11 student Ava, lessons included factoring quadratics and finding x-intercepts, plus applying quadratic equations to real-world worded scenarios for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 mathematics, one student often avoided writing down working for fraction or addition questions—leading to lost steps and confusion. "He blurts out a guess when frustrated instead of taking time to process," noted a tutor, which eroded confidence during lessons.

By Year 11, organization issues surfaced: in algebra and trigonometry, skipping written steps and messy handwriting ("9 looks like y") made it hard to check answers or find errors.

During VCE Biology revision, another student's extended responses suffered because ideas weren't clearly structured on paper; she needed more practice turning her knowledge into well-organized answers under exam conditions.

Recent Achievements

One Freshwater Creek tutor noticed a real shift in Krisztian's approach to maths: after initially second-guessing himself on worded problems, he now works through them independently with just some encouragement and even surprised himself by finishing a recent test much faster than expected.

In Year 10, Poppy moved from struggling with complex ratio problems to actively seeking out tougher index law questions and attempting them without hesitation—a big change from her earlier reluctance.

Tatie, preparing for VCE Biology, tackled multiple-choice problem-solving questions and managed to answer short-answer sections more accurately than she had before, completing them ahead of time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Torquay Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Freshwater Creek Steiner School.
