I think not just to teach but to integrate the mathematics into their brain. Ways to do this include repetition, paraphrasing and getting them to say things back to me in their own words, these three things are extremely important so that they don't jut forget things when I leave. I think I'm really good at explaining the maths, carefully and…

A tutor can make or break a students fervour towards a subject. He can make a concept really easy for students to understand and make confident. Having the patience and being a good listener. Having the two is what I believe where you can start building a better relationship with the student. By listening carefully to the student and also being patient with them (since people learns at different speed and different methods). From there, I can understand students in their area of weakness…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students feel safe to try, fail, and grow. Many students come into tutoring thinking they are "just bad at maths," and it's our job as tutors to help break that mindset. From my own experience, I know how powerful it is when someone takes the time to understand your gaps, explain things at…

From my experience I noticed that there are students who still hold their voices at school when they have a doubt due to several factors. Once they are comfortable with a tutor, they are more open to questions in their mind and try solving them one on one with the tutor. On this note, I find being a tutor amusing as I always find solving their…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them discover self-motivation. I think teaching students how to be independent is something tutors must do. Prioritizing things like active learning wherein students get to question things themselves, rather than being spoon-fed answers is important. Making them learn that they can find the answers themselves if they put in the effort is important. And obviously creating all…

I consider that helping them to understand the concept by themselves instead of doing their job, is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student because that is the way they learn. Making mistakes feel safe. If a student is afraid to get something wrong, they'll never actually engage with the material; they'll try to avoid being caught not knowing. The most important thing a tutor can do is create an environment where asking for help early feels like the smart move, not the embarrassing one. Because the longer you wait, the…

It is important to make the student feel comfortable when you are tutoring them. When they are comfortable, they would be more open to explaining themselves to you about concepts they don't understand. This would then make it easier for the tutor to explain the concept and help them understand it better! Another important aspect is how you…

Inside Glen HuntlyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Henry worked on converting mixed fractions to improper fractions and practiced adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions with different denominators.

In Year 8, Sarah focused on simplifying algebraic expressions and collecting like terms using practice questions from her textbook.

For Year 10, Michael tackled quadratic equations from past tests as well as set notation in its various forms, including finding minimum points of graphs through worked examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student struggled to keep track of negative signs when adding and subtracting fractions, with one tutor noting, "she needs to look at the signs in front of the term… then subtract or add accordingly."

In Year 10, forgetting to write units and not double-checking data led to errors in measurement and statistics questions.

A Year 11 student avoided attempting complex polynomial division without notes—hesitation here slowed progress during independent tasks.

Meanwhile, a senior student repeatedly skipped re-reading worded problems fully, missing key details and needing extra explanation before proceeding with calculus applications.

Recent Achievements

A Glen Huntly tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, Sienna, used to wait for hints before attempting tricky calculus problems, but in their latest session she worked through finding derivatives from first principles mostly on her own and asked targeted questions only when really stuck.

Meanwhile, Lily in Year 7 had previously struggled to spot mistakes in her test answers, but after some guided practice she now independently reviews her work and corrects errors without prompting.

In another recent session, Eve (Year 10) was able to solve exponential equations that had caused trouble in earlier homework attempts and finished the whole set without needing step-by-step guidance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glen Eira College.
