I believe that the most important things a tutor can do for a student is not just being able to teach them a new concept, or help them with solving a difficult problem, but being able to provide the student with the confidence and enthusiasm to tackle similar and more difficult problems in the future. I think some of my strengths as a tutor are my…

Enlighten students. If a student is experiencing any difficulties in life, they can talk to me. I am a very good listener. I will also give advice if necessary. Of course, the most important thing is to help students to improve their grades. Patience. One of my high school teachers said that I am the most patient person he had ever seen.…

To help students understand what they can do or what options they have when they have questions or problems is important. Exclusively giving answers and solutions doesn't help students think critically and understand clearly. Instead, allowing students to figure out what they should do or comprehend certain ideas deeply would be something…

Important things a tutor can do for a student can be as subtle as providing the basic habits of Learning and self progression for the student. Many younger students struggle with this and tutoring can only go so far for them. Enforcing self-learning and the confidence to learn sometimes can be more beneficial than the topics covered. Personal…

Putting things in an easy way and guiding the students to think this way to solve the problem. This is very important, especially in maths and science subjects, the key for students to improve is by really understanding and the best way to check is to are they able to explain it back to you on another day, not to memorize by hard, maths also not…

In my opinion, the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to motivate them and guide them to understand their true potential. A tutor should correctly recognise the strengths and weaknesses of the student and design a unique learning plan that allows the student to work on a comfortable pace and be self-motivated and confident…

Providing clear explanations, patient support, and tailored approaches to their learning styles are essential. A tutor should cultivate critical thinking, encourage questions, and foster a positive learning atmosphere. Equally important is instilling self-confidence and a growth mindset, enabling students to tackle challenges independently. Also,…

Inside GlensideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Louis focused on multiplication skills by practising 2 and 3 times tables using grids, explored area and perimeter, and was introduced to basic fractions through visual worksheets.

In Year 10, Maja worked on linear relations by graphing equations in y=mx+c form and identifying x/y intercepts, before moving into financial maths topics such as percentage conversions and worded problems involving discounts.

For Year 11 student Sam, recent lessons covered calculus fundamentals like finding derivatives from first principles and applying them to tangent/normal equations, as well as tackling statistics concepts including mean, median, and mode.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, one student admitted to "just getting lazy when writing," choosing simpler vocabulary and structure even though his spoken ideas were stronger. This led to run-on sentences and grammar errors that persisted despite direct feedback—he often only picked them up when the tutor was present.

In Year 7 Maths, a student's lack of times tables recall slowed her problem-solving, especially with negative numbers; as the tutor observed, "basic arithmetic…slows her down."

Meanwhile, in Year 11 History, quoting large slabs of text instead of concise evidence weakened essay drafts. These habits meant less progress during independent work and slower development under test conditions.

Recent Achievements

One Glenside tutor recently saw a huge shift in a Year 9 student who, after previously writing very little, completed an entire essay to standard and now holds himself accountable for improving his phrasing.

In senior maths, another high schooler moved from struggling with simultaneous equations to scoring a perfect mark on her latest test—something she hadn't come close to before.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student surprised everyone by tackling harder area questions without hesitation and finishing them confidently, even when working early in the morning during school holidays.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Linden Park Primary School.
