To find a way to explain problems to a student that suits that particular student, as you can explain something to someone for a long time, but they may still be unable to understand it if it isn't presented in a way that is suitable for their learning style. I think it is also important to be able to answer questions outside of the tutoring time…

A tutor makes a student feel like even though the work is difficult and deadlines are looming, everything will be okay. The tutor acts as a mentor who helps students to improve their time management and study skills, as well as clarifying difficult points. This makes the student feel reassured about their progress through the course. I like to…

Patience and understanding. Some of the best teachers I had in were those who would take the time to listen to your question and the answer them with careful detail so that you are able to understand the answer and the concept behind that answer. I believe that one of my strengths as a tutor would be that I was never top of my class. I do believe…

In short, making the academic journey simpler and more enjoyable. To do this, I think a tutor should have the ability to: identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the student, build a personalised structured learning plan, build foundational understanding of subjects not just memorisation, break down complex concepts into manageable chunks,…

The most important thing for a tutor is to understand that each student is different. Every student will have different methods of learning and also different abilities in retaining information. It is vital for a tutor to see what the student is understanding and what they are not. Different methods should be placed to ensure the student is…

Provide students with the confidence they need to understand and solve problems using their own skills. Also making the task more interesting and engaging as that will help with their ability to problem solve and become invested in finding a solution. As a tutor, I believe it is very important to teach and advice on 'how to study' along with concepts. Throughout my undergraduate degree, through friends, my tutors and lecturers, I have learnt many tricks and tips which I love to share with my students making them understand concepts better and build a liking for the subject. I enjoy what I study…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is to help the student find confidence that they can achieve, whilst keeping their passion alive for the subject. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them to understand the topic and not just to help them complete the assignment. It is easy to sit with the student and help them through each step and each problem to complete some assignment, but if they did not understand it then the session was essentially useless for…

Being a tutor, one can do a lot of things for a student apart from teaching. A tutor has the responsibility of mentoring the students in career and general life. Being able to engage the student in the lesson and making sure they actually understand. Learning should be a fun process if not it should be made as fun as possible. The important thing is to develop the student's ability to independently study. It is like that proverb 'Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. I consider tutoring to be important in two ways: academics and self-growth. Being a tutor to me means bringing out the best in someone academically as well as providing them with the tools they need to become independent, life-long learners. The most important things i can do for a student include asking the students how they answered certain questions, allowing them to realise where their errors are and learn off of their mistakes. Inside GlenungaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Louis practised subtraction and worked on understanding the concept of times tables, focusing especially on the 2s, using hands-on activities to reinforce learning.

Year 10 student Maja tackled financial maths by working through worded problems involving discounts and percentage increases in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sam reviewed calculus concepts such as derivatives and addressed previous challenges with logarithms by applying these skills to more complex questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly left working out of algebra solutions, admitting, "I just get lazy when writing and choose the easier route," which made it harder to catch errors with negatives.

In Year 11 English, a student's essay drafts showed persistent run-on sentences—despite being able to identify them aloud, he struggled to fix them independently on his iPad.

A Year 9 student relied heavily on quoting large slabs of text in history assignments rather than summarising ideas in his own words.

In Year 7 maths, times tables gaps led to slow progress solving fraction problems and meant more time spent counting than reasoning through new concepts.

Recent Achievements

One Glenunga tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 9 student who previously struggled to write at length; last week, he completed an entire essay independently, something he'd never managed before.

In senior maths, a high schooler who used to hesitate with statistics scored 85 on his most recent assessment—well above his previous result—and has begun setting personal targets for the next exam.

Meanwhile, a younger student who often guessed quietly when stuck now openly asks for help and explains her thinking during problem-solving tasks. She finished all her addition questions without needing prompts this session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fullarton Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenunga International High School.
