Rather than teaching a student, the tutor inspires the student. It is vital for a tutor to provide the skills and techniques required to solve complex problems rather than teaching them how to solve these problems. Getting a student excited about learning is also pivotal as this provides a more engaging environment and increases their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think and learn. This is far more valuable for future work and study than any one topic to be learnt. My principle strength as a tutor would be my understanding of how mathematical concepts work, which helps me to explain them. I do this often with my colleagues during…

I think the most important thing is really understanding how each student learns, not just what they're struggling with. I try to be patient and break things down until it actually clicks for them, not just enough to get through the next assignment. And I think creating a space where they feel comfortable asking questions, even if they think it's…

When students are able to connect the dots of a topic and are completely able to understand the topic with the help of their tutors and inspire students from not liking the subject to explore the subject for future studies are the most important things I believe a tutor can do for their students The biggest strength of me as a tutor is that I have…

To be able to enable to student to think, and answer hard questions when all else has failed. A tutor shouldn't teach a student but rather guide them to asking the right questions and figuring out the right paths to take in order to get the information that they need. Go at a pace in which the student feels comfortable, as going too quickly may be the reason they didn't understand it when their teachers taught them. Following this a tutor needs to have done some work on the subject before seeing the student as if the tutor doesn't understand what he/she is saying, the student has no chance. Also going through…

I am only with the student for a short time compared to their time in school, so increasing intrinsic motivation to learn has a much greater effect in the long run, as well as decreasing the chance of burnout due to stress in the higher grades. A tutor should be able to establish rapport and trust by being honest. This is the critical element to a successful tutoring relationship. Inside GracevilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Oliver practised long multiplication and division, as well as working with decimals and identifying different angles.

Year 7 student Sophie focused on graphing and number lines, using plotting activities to reinforce understanding.

For Year 10, Emily worked through solving line equations between specific points and applied problem-solving skills to algebraic contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student reviewing past test results in maths sometimes missed chances to correct errors—notes read, "going over past test results and some more problem solving," but little feedback was acted on before moving ahead.

In Year 8, one learner found it tough to follow multi-step questions in algebra, losing track of process when calculations became lengthy; as noted, "a bit tough following long form multi-tiered questions."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student practicing long multiplication often left working untidy, making it harder to spot mistakes. In each case, confusion or uncertainty slowed progress rather than lack of content knowledge.

Recent Achievements

One Graceville tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid exam prep now actively seeking out practice problems, especially in linear functions—she even combined equations on her own for the first time last week.

A Year 7 student, previously hesitant with problem solving, surprised his tutor by tackling multi-step homework questions independently and finishing ahead of schedule.

Meanwhile, a younger learner who'd struggled to distinguish certain letters can now sound out almost the entire alphabet and self-corrects when mixing up 'J' and 'G'. Last session, he read a full page aloud without skipping any tricky letters.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Indooroopilly Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christ the King School.
