I think that would be putting themselves as a student and be the teacher they always wanted/needed when they were their age. There is nothing more powerful than a teacher who is still a student at heart, in my opinion. Empathy as a student, as well as finding simple ways to explain complex…

I think understanding that every kid is different and special in their own way, and they have their own needs and methods of approaching problems is very important. Every tutor should try to personalise the tutor session based on the needs, learning pattern and pace, interests and goals of the children so that they can make the most out of it. I…

Relatability is so important. We see a huge disconnect between teachers/tutors and students. I believe that an equal playing field with mutual respect creates a unique learning environment and nurtures encouragement. The student can see how the teacher got to where they are, and can realise that they, too, can learn these concepts just as those…

Instead of just providing answers, a tutor should guide students in developing problem-solving skills and adapting to their learning style. Creating a supportive and comfortable environment is perhaps the most crucial thing a tutor can do for a student. When students feel safe and at ease, they are more likely to open up about their difficulties and ask questions without fear of judgment. This openness allows the tutor to better understand where the student is struggling and tailor…

I think the most important thing to understand as a tutor is that different students think differently. Certain students will naturally have more or less affinity to different subjects, but also different ways of learning. Trying to figure out which way to best teach requires understanding which way students are best able to learn. For instance,…

It might take some time but everyone is capable of accomplishing what they want Although I love maths and logics I am a really sociable person so It is easy and nice to help someone understand something. As a tutor the best thing to do for the student is to be patient, resilient and adaptable. As each student has different learning styles you need to be observant and communicate with them as much as possible to ensure that they are optimising their learning. Furthermore, the tutor must be enthusiastic about the subject, if the student sees that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is provide a learning environment free from both the rigid structure and inherent judgement present in centres of mass education. A calmer, more personal environment allows the establishment of time tables and study plans more conducive to the individual student. There is also…

To help a student walk the right path that he/she desires. A tutor should understand a students passion and dream and help them achieve this dream. The most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build a foundation of confidence and independent thinking. Rather than simply providing the correct answers, a tutor should guide a student through the logic of a problem so they can eventually solve it on their own. It is also vital to build a strong rapport where the student feels…

Give the student the foundational skills to excel on the own once outside of tutoring. A good tutor will be able to get their student to a level where they feel competent to work by themselves, and know both how to solve a problem, and why we approach the problem the way we do. My strengths as a tutor is my relatability, as math didn’t come easy…

Inside GreenwichTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Adrian revised **fractions** for an upcoming test, including multiplying and adding/subtracting fractions, and was introduced to Pythagoras' theorem through practice questions.

In Year 9, Mia worked on **trigonometry by applying SOH CAH TOA** to find missing sides and angles in triangles, then moved on to quadratic trinomials using factorisation techniques for both monic and non-monic cases.

For Year 10, Lucas focused on **parabolas—finding x- and y-intercepts, axis of symmetry, and the vertex**—as well as tackling trig application questions involving bearings and non-right-angle triangles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student showed strong conceptual understanding but often avoided writing out all steps in algebra and trigonometry problems. As a tutor noted, "she needs more encouragement to write down whole thinking process—don't skip steps in working as some small mistakes were made."

In Year 7 English, another student struggled with motivation and rarely engaged during lessons; this meant new techniques for poetry analysis weren't retained.

A Year 6 student's fraction work revealed confusion between proper and improper fractions, which persisted due to missing homework practice.

When confidence dipped after setbacks, revision tended to focus only on easier questions already mastered.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Greenwich recently saw Abi, a Year 11 student, arrive at her session with a list of questions she'd struggled with—showing new initiative and clear self-awareness that wasn't there before.

Josie, another high schooler, used to hesitate when faced with simultaneous equations but now confidently solves them using both the substitution and elimination methods after focused practice.

Meanwhile, Imogen in primary school has made tangible gains: she went back to previously tricky maths problems last week and solved them independently this time around, remembering each step without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greenwich Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Greenwich Public School.
