A tutor should be able to understand how they can help a student and should teach content or provide help in a way that suits their student's learning style. This would ensure that students are able to learn easier and with less stress. Students should not just be taught what to learn but also how to learn depending on the topic learnt, since it…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is be there for the student. As an experienced tutor at Kumon, I deal with a variety of students who all have different learning capabilities. Some students can easily understand problems and some don't. It is important to constantly keep checking in on students to see if they having any further issues…

Most important thing a tutor can do is teach and guide them. Teach them the things they need to learn and tell them what to do to get proficient at it. As a tutor my strengths include, ability to explain things clearly and multiple times if required. As well as listening to the students doubts and understanding. Also going according to the…

Understanding the Student’s Needs: Every student is unique, with their own strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. A good tutor takes the time to understand these aspects and tailors their teaching approach accordingly. Creating a Safe Learning Environment: Students should feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and expressing…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence, not just academically, but in all areas of life. Personally, I found my tutors to be open and friendly, which made the learning experience not only more enjoyable and effective but also helped me build a strong relationship with them and grow in social…

I personally consider the interactive and "adaptive" aspects of being a tutor to be the most important things a tutor can do for their student. In my opinion, keeping the student engaged, such as through mini breaks or games between long sessions of work, is the most effective way of teaching them in a fun, yet informative manner. Moreover, being…

I consider that the most important thing is faith in their students. No matter how dire the situation is, a tutor's faith and belief in their student should not waver. As students are looking to better themselves, a tutor's belief in them is crucial as they look towards their mentor for guidance. This, in addition with a tutor's well researched…

I stand by the rules of “Push the strength, fix the weaknessâ€. The tutor should always be able to cater the lessons and learning materials according to the needs of the student. Subsequently, these lessons should also be well thought-out and be executed as planned. By this way, it minimises errors and allows room for improvement with the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure that concepts are fully clear. When a student understands the topic well, they should feel confident in solving similar questions on their own. Building this confidence not only helps in academics but also encourages independent learning, which is essential for long-term…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to create an encouraging environment where a student feels comfortable and supported. For a tutor to be an eloquent individual immersed with a wealth of knowledge it useless, if they do not frequently follow up with their students. It needs "regular maintenance" in car analogy. Tutoring is a marathon not a sprint. Tutors must hope to retain the students’ knowledge rather than sophisticatedly teach content without regular revision…

Most people's perception of the job of a tutor is always to guide a student to be successful in the study/subject. Although that is an important role as a tutor, I find the most important aspect a tutor can do for a student is to further ignite their passion and interest in their subject. No matter how much a tutor can help, but if a student does…

Inside HarkawayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Zarleah practised multiplication and division, focusing on worded problems to strengthen her understanding of number operations.

In Year 8, Neva worked on writing lab reports for chemical changes and revised the properties of elements in preparation for a science test, using recent class experiments as examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Dom tackled genetics topics such as Punnett squares—including dihybrid crosses—and reviewed key terms like alleles and chromosomes for an upcoming biology assessment.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled to keep her notes organized during Biology, making it harder to refer back when preparing for tests; as a tutor observed, "I would continue to encourage Dom to keep organised notes—especially moving into Year 12."

In Chemistry, another senior student was caught off guard by not knowing the next topic in advance, which led to time spent guessing rather than consolidating knowledge.

Meanwhile, a primary student working on large numbers sometimes wrote "102" instead of "120," showing how confusion with number formation slowed her progress and added frustration mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Harkaway tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate when stuck on statistics problems now confidently asks for clarification as soon as something feels unclear, leading to much smoother sessions.

In another case, a high schooler working on lab reports moved from not knowing the structure at all to independently drafting several sections correctly without prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger student who previously mixed up times tables has started using factors when solving tricky fraction problems—a strategy she avoided before—and just completed a set of worded division questions entirely on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bunjil Place Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Harkaway Primary School.
