I think an essential thing a tutor can do for their student is be empathetic! Often, for teachers, its hard to understand what students are feeling, since school and lifestyle has changed from the time they were students to now (in a global pandemic). Therefore, being an tutor who displays empathy about understanding what its like being a student…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is guide that student to success, this can be achieved by listening and being attentive to the childs learning styles and needs. Patience and understanding. I believe that patience is one of the most important qualities to have as a tutor, this is because it can be very frustrating as a…

I think one of the most important things is for the tutor to be understanding and listen to the student's problems to be able to grasp what they are struggling with and aid them effectively. It is also useful for the tutor to build a good relationship with the student to help increase their strengths in learning and incorporate their interests I…

I believe the most important aspect is encouraging learning and allowing students to explore creative aspects of learning freely. I believe that the way you are taught and the encouragement you receive along the way has a significant impact on a student's performance. Hence, I believe that teaching a student to be confident in themselves and their…

a tutor first needs to understand the capability of the student considering all the strengths and weakness and work on it. Only just transforming knowledge will not help the child grow but instead develop a liking for that particular subject will make that child understand it more easily. Temporary teaching does't work in this teaching field.…

I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

I would consider a connection to (and understanding of) the student to be the most important thing for a one on one tutoring relationship. Without a thorough understanding of their needs and situation, one cannot properly assess the best way to assist in their learning. I'm very personable, able to chat with anyone about almost anything. My high…

The most important thing would be to teach a student that studying shouldn't be a chore, and that giving it their all matters more than receiving a perfect grade. The most important thing that a tutor can do is to pivot their teaching style in order to suit not only the content but how the student learns. Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel at ease within the subject being taught. Complete trust and availability on the part of the tutor is also important.…

Inside HawthornTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ella focused on fractions and percentages, showing strong recall of key processes and also worked through review questions for an upcoming maths test.

Year 8 student Molly practiced algebra skills by expanding brackets and collecting like terms, as well as calculating the area of composite shapes by breaking them into simpler components.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student revised negative numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and used factor trees to strengthen their understanding of integer operations.

Recent Challenges

Over several sessions, some high school students showed a tendency to rely on calculators for basic operations—one Year 9 student was encouraged repeatedly to practice multiplication and algebra without technology, as she understands the concepts but finds doing quick calculations challenging.

In Year 8 algebra, messy or inconsistent working made it difficult to spot small errors; for example, incorrect dimensions crept into solutions when steps weren't clearly set out.

In primary grades, forgetting times tables (especially 4s and 8s) meant number recall slowed down problem-solving.

When test review was suggested before assessments in Year 10, worded problems were often left unattempted due to lack of confidence.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Hawthorn noticed one Year 9 student who previously needed step-by-step prompting for algebra now attempts questions independently and even suggests her own approaches before asking for help.

In a recent high school session, another student who used to guess when stuck has started pausing to identify where she went wrong on maths problems—she caught her own mistake with minimal guidance this week.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled to recall number patterns is now recognising them more quickly and finishing subtraction tasks with fewer errors than before, completing all ten assigned problems without needing extra support.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mitcham Memorial Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Westbourne Park Primary School.
