I consider it vital to create a comfortable environment for students where they are able to make mistakes and learn from these mistakes, but also where they are encouraged to continue being tutored and apply themselves in their subjects. Furthermore, another important aspect of tutoring is being organised and being able to provide students with…

Probably to make sure they understand the underlying material rather than just giving the answers. Helping them through problems, and actually encouraging and motivating them along without just revealing the answers will help develop their problem solving skills, making the next problems easier to overcome. I adapt to specific student's different…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to personalise their learning in order to teach to the student’s strengths and minimise their weaknesses. I believe that different students have different learning styles and study techniques that work for them, and it is important that this is catered to in the students…

The most important thing is to empower the student. The best thing would be to help them understand how their own minds work, how their own (unique) learning process works- that can make them unstoppable. My long chain of experience. My passion for empowering minds. And my ability to explain difficult concepts in many different ways for many…

In my opinion, a teacher must always be willing to learn those concepts for his students which they want to know. Also , a teacher must even provide them with some learning methods so that they can get grasp over any topic easily. Moreover, a teacher must always motivate a student and help him to think out of a box. Apart from that, teacher can…

The most important thing as a tutor is acknowledging their strength and weaknesses and using them to improve their academic skills. Also allowing the students to know that it's ok to make mistakes, that's why tutors are here to help. Easy to communicate and open to any type of conversations. I can break things down into primary school language to…

Show commitment, whether its through showing up on time, or taking some of your spare time at home to mark their work. Also to support and encourage the individual to achiever their very best. I can explain a concept in many different ways, so if the student doesn't understand, I can easily explain in other ways until they get it. I can also adapt…

Build a relationship with them. I believe that the learning will be far more effective for the student if there is a strong relationship between myself and the student. Inside HeathcoteTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Imogen focused on multiplication and division, including double-digit problems, using step-by-step practice.

For Year 10, Alex worked through algebraic skills involving BIDMAS (order of operations) and practiced solving equations with percentages.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Maya reviewed Financial Maths concepts—such as annuities—and tackled past HSC questions on Critical Path Analysis to strengthen exam readiness.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, one student hesitated to begin independent work without direct prompting, as noted: "she waited for my suggestion before starting each question." This reduced the opportunity to develop confidence in tackling unseen material.

A Year 11 Chemistry student left homework incomplete and rarely specified which areas needed targeted revision—making it harder to address gaps efficiently before exams.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 Maths student struggled with organizing working out clearly when converting decimals to percentages; missing steps often led to confusion and repeated errors. These habits sometimes meant more time was spent retracing old ground instead of progressing.

Recent Achievements

One Heathcote tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate asking questions now openly seeks clarification when she hits confusing parts, which means she's finally tackling tricky maths problems head-on.

Another high schooler has started reviewing her old exam mistakes and can now clearly explain how she'd fix them—something she avoided before.

Among the younger students, one Year 5 learner began using her own notes to solve word problems independently, rather than waiting for hints.

Last session, that same student chose a new strategy on her own and finished all ten problems without errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Engadine Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Heathcote High School.
