In my experience as a student when my tutors understood my problems and tried to solve them was the thing that stayed with me the longest, also tutors that are your tutors when your studying but friends when you just talk to them. Tutors that are not afraid of showing some tough love when they are disappointed with me are also the ones that keep…

I believe that a tutor needs to communicate with the student about their needs. I think that if the student and the tutor communicate well and both parties understand each other, then it will help the student tremendously. They will be willing to ask questions and participate during the lesson. I am an approachable person. I feel like my passion…

Listen to what they are struggling with and do your personal best to help the student to build confidence in themselves and in that area. Furthemore, having a good in-depth subject knowledge will be more than helpful too. The most important and primary action that a tutor needs to do is to know his/her student as it elicits the tutor a good background about the student strenghts and weaknesses. This factor leads the tutor to construct an study method that is personalised and programmed based on the given student, this manifest in a more efficient and high quality…

Allow a student to learn and gain knowledge in a fun way, or at least learn willingly and most importantly joyfully. I think I have the capability to teach students younger than me with patience and willingness. I think that understanding what younger teenagers or children thinks and want is an important aspect when it comes for them to gain…

The most important thing a tutor is to create a learning environment that the students can learn and fully understand how to do the hard questions. The tutor is able to solidify the student's knowledge and set them up for success. I constantly ask the student to let me know how they are going. If there's any questions or concerns they have, my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is to believe in them. When a child's role model believes in them they begin to believe in themselves and, I believe, that is the first step to accomplishing great things. If a child believes that they have the ability to do something they are more inclined to put more effort…

Provide motivation and help develop a passion (or at least an appreciation) for Mathematics. Success would be more likely if the student is enjoying the subject matter. Furthering this; to teach the student confidence in their abilities and eventually be more independent in thier learning/study. It is also important that a tutor understand the…

A tutor must teach a student not only the content but also how to learn the content. Many student struggle simply due to their study habits and not having the confidence to try questions. Furthermore, learning the 'algorithms' to question is also where students seem to go wrong. It is imperative that they understand the underlying theory so they…

I firmly believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to personalise their learning experience. The most important role of a tutor is to help students build a strong and logical way of thinking about mathematics. Rather than simply teaching formulas or providing answers, a tutor should develop the student’s problem-solving process and give them a reliable framework for approaching unfamiliar questions. As a tutor, I think the most important thing is really understanding the student—how they learn, what they find tricky, and what excites them about the subject. Inside HeathmontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Mia focused on mastering multiplication facts with a times tables grid and worked through several practice questions on long division, including problems with decimals.

Year 7 student Jack revised percentages by calculating discounts and converting between fractions and percentages, then practiced financial maths skills such as finding profit and understanding rates of pay.

For Year 8, Ella concentrated on algebraic techniques for solving linear equations and revisited BIDMAS (order of operations) using step-by-step examples to prepare for an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student often avoided writing full working, especially when solving for x—this led to confusion with negative signs and extra time spent fixing errors rather than progressing ("needs to improve writing down working out").

In Year 11 English, notes showed that missed classes weren't always followed up; "definitely write those notes up for the missed class on quadrilaterals so we can follow up and make up the missed work."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner hesitated to show division steps out of concern for mistakes. As a result, accuracy wavered during multi-step problems and confidence dipped mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Heathmont tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who had always hesitated to ask for help; during recent sessions, she started checking her logic out loud and clarifying steps, instead of quietly guessing.

In Year 8 maths, another student finally broke through on algebra: after weeks of confusion with expanding and simplifying expressions, he solved several equations independently and even explained his process back.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who used to rush worded problems began underlining key information before working—leading her to solve all division questions correctly without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Realm Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Great Ryrie Primary School.
