To be honest, an excellent tutor needs to be able to assist students in meeting deadlines. Delivering instruction that gives students the tools they need to be more independent in their studies is as vital, though. I would suggest to my pupils working on abilities in time management, critical thinking, and evaluation. I think that one of my skills…

As a tutor, I consider it essential to establish a positive connection not only with the students but also with their parents. It is more significant for a tutor to offer support and guidance to students, leading them toward a beneficial path, rather than imposing additional pressure or burdens on them. As a tutor, I take pride in my versatility…

A tutor can engage the mind of a child and develop a love for the subject within the child. Education has the power to broaden horizons and inculcate a sense of satisfaction which I believe can be brought in by the help of a tutor. Being able to communicate at a level that the child understands is a must. As a tutor, you must be able to build a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make him/her comfortable and be a like a friend. It is crucial for a tutor to make the students understand that they are free to ask any doubts or questions without being afraid. I am mostly available out of tuition hours as well via text or call. So I will be there if they have any last…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to encourage him/her to pursue a career in their liking and to empathise with their difficulties and teach them how to overcome them. It is also of utmost importance that a tutor must lower themselves to their understanding to teach a student. Passion to teach and a drive to progress as an…

Being there and answering questions they ask at anytime whoch would be crucial. The most important thing to keep in mind when tutoring in my opinion is to help them gain confidence & enjoyment in the subject. If a student believes they are bad at a subject, they often won't try as hard because they view it as pointless. Confirmation bias can also lead to only noticing when they make mistakes, meaning they won't recognise the…

The most important thing for a tutor is to never underestimate a student, and to be there for them as a support and to show them that they can. If a student loses self esteem and think that they can't do it...they wont. It's all about giving them a healthy mindset which allows them to gain the knowledge given. My biggest strength i believe is how…

If you can make your students shine and bring their own strengths to the forefront, you've won. You have to believe in them before they believe in themselves and if you're in tune with your student and can bring out all their hidden gems, there's nothing that could compare. Most importantly, putting time and efforts after students till their basics are clear is the key for a tutor to use. After clearing the basics, revising and revisiting the already done work is equally important. Having had experience in tutoring, patience is my strength. My son can't wait to have his maths lessons with his tutor every week! She is helping him learn through wonderful and fun ways!
Konstantina, Preston

Inside Heidelberg WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia focused on factorising algebraic expressions and substitution in more complex equations to build confidence with foundational algebra skills.

In Year 9, Jacob practised graphing parabolas as well as substituting values into quadratic functions, using worked examples for clarity.

For Year 10, Sam concentrated on solving linear equations and revisited core trigonometric ratios—sine, cosine, and tangent to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often forgot to bring her maths textbook, which meant gaps in reviewing problem areas and "she needed to bring her maths books so I could see what she had struggled with this week."

In a senior class, one student ran out of time during an exam; as the tutor put it, "he missed some simple errors" because he didn't check answers before submitting.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student's algebra work was messy and hard to follow—incorrect values crept in when calculations weren't clearly laid out.

Distraction in English led another student to guess answers without reading passages closely.

Recent Achievements

One Heidelberg West tutor noticed Kiera now tackles more complex maths problems without hesitation—just weeks ago she'd often wait for reassurance before starting.

In Year 8, Ollie moved from making frequent mistakes in timed tests to using a standard formula they developed together for negative indices, helping him answer these questions independently and with fewer errors.

Meanwhile, Felix in primary school has shifted from being distracted during class to focusing well enough to score 8/8 on his fractions test after struggling with this topic earlier; he completed all the questions accurately on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Pius X School.
