I think being able to quickly gauge the level that the student is at, including any weaknesses/missed areas and then addressing these one by one. To inspire a student to be curious and develop a love of learning, as people are not often motivated to improve in areas in which they lack passion. The last family I had tutored had told me that after my sessions with their son, he had stopped crying every time he had to complete his school homework. From this experience, I have come to…

The most important thing a tutor can do is give confidence to a student and help guide them to enjoy the subject more. This is important as real change can only occur when the student is engaged and looking forward to learning and improving. My Strength as a tutor is the way in which I am able to alter my tutoring style to better fit my students…

A proper ATTENTION. A good tutor will identify the student’s learning style so that they are able to present information in a way that has the greatest effect. A good tutor will take the time to connect meaningfully with the student and their families. They will be caring and compassionate, but also professional and organized. Having a good…

To provide support in a one on one fashion is extremely valuable. Having extra tools and strategies to tackle questions can only increase ones confidence, which is to say, a tutor can provide what is not always provided in the classroom. It is ultimately this process of developing more confidence and independence in learning that is crucial to…

The Tutor should have a lot of patience while teaching children, as each child is different from one other. Tutor should understand each student's ability and talent and motivate them to do further in their own field. It should be the tutor's job to go to each student individually and ask if they are good with study materials and understanding…

My son can't wait to have his maths lessons with his tutor every week! She is helping him learn through wonderful and fun ways!
Konstantina, Preston

Inside Heidelberg WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia focused on factorising algebraic expressions and substitution in more complex equations to build confidence with foundational algebra skills.

In Year 9, Jacob practised graphing parabolas as well as substituting values into quadratic functions, using worked examples for clarity.

For Year 10, Sam concentrated on solving linear equations and revisited core trigonometric ratios—sine, cosine, and tangent to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often forgot to bring her maths textbook, which meant gaps in reviewing problem areas and "she needed to bring her maths books so I could see what she had struggled with this week."

In a senior class, one student ran out of time during an exam; as the tutor put it, "he missed some simple errors" because he didn't check answers before submitting.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student's algebra work was messy and hard to follow—incorrect values crept in when calculations weren't clearly laid out.

Distraction in English led another student to guess answers without reading passages closely.

Recent Achievements

One Heidelberg West tutor noticed Kiera now tackles more complex maths problems without hesitation—just weeks ago she'd often wait for reassurance before starting.

In Year 8, Ollie moved from making frequent mistakes in timed tests to using a standard formula they developed together for negative indices, helping him answer these questions independently and with fewer errors.

Meanwhile, Felix in primary school has shifted from being distracted during class to focusing well enough to score 8/8 on his fractions test after struggling with this topic earlier; he completed all the questions accurately on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Pius X School.
