I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them the ability of effective self management in their studies. The best thing a tutor can do is to teach them learning strategies and develop a student’s self awareness in their learning, so that the students are more independent and are able to develop their own learning…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire passion; a person who is sincerely interested in a subject and has a drive to continue delving into it will naturally go much further and achieve much higher then an unmotivated genius no matter the intellect as they will enjoy the entire journey of learning and not just focus on the results. I…

A tutor can drastically improve a student's confidence in a subject and in their own ability. I think this is really important as this confidence boost will enable them to approach many aspects of their life with less fear, leading to greater opportunities. Throughout my school career I've learned lots about how to study and learn, and I am really…

I achieve this though understanding unique learning patterns and teaching specific effective study habits and processes which reduce the stresses and anxiety which are all too commonly associated with exams and assignment deadlines. Once developed, these skills are applicable well…

First of all, communication is definitely vital in order to engage with tutees. Before any information exchange can take place, both parties should be able to relay their thoughts and express their opinions as clear as possible to avoid misconceptions. This skill is essential in the case of tutoring, as most of the knowledge exchange are only…

Inspire them. Anyone can regurgitate textbook material in a different way. But only few can truly educate and inspire their students to become the very best version of themselves. Some of the strengths that I believe are quite necessary for a tutor other than leadership are resilience, and the ability to properly analyse a students learning…

To instil confidence in themselves as it can take them a long way in terms of motivation and improving their learning by being positive and motivating. Tutors have the unique opportunity to be the person the student gets to ask all their questions to and really get down to what they need help with. I really cater for the student's needs and what…

I think a tutor has a lot of power in empowering a student and making them love learning and love the subject. If a tutor can reorient a student's perspective of a certain topic and make the student learn it, it enables the student to engage more with the subject and hopefully increases their passion for learning and education in general which I…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to foster confidence, encourage independent thinking, and provide personalised support. Beyond…

I think that providing a safe and encouraging space for a student is the most important thing for a tutor to do, as well as ignite some passion in them to succeed and be a support system. To just listen. As counterintuitive as it sounds, listening is more important than teaching. As a tutor one must fully grasp what the student wants and needs and how they best learn. To be able to pick up on non verbal cues if the student is too shy or uncomfortable to ask for help. Everyone learns best in a different way, so a tutor needs to be…

Obviously bumping up grades. But before that comes there is the massive component where the tutor is able to let the student feel like they actually know what they're doing. Instilling confidence in someone and helping them to not feel dumb can change the way they approach learning and improve everything about their academic life. Coming from…

I believe that while grades are important, they are not always completely comprehensive of a student's ability in a subject. If the student is able to walk away from a session being able to understand the concept and feel interested and confident with it, they not only will gain better results in exams but will have a better idea of the subject as…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their problem solving skills. Tutoring is a noble occupation. My experience with the previous tutoring has taught me many things that can be really important for a student. Some students tend to trigger their fear of…

Inside Highland ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student India focused on recognising and working with fractions, and also practised telling time on an analogue clock using hands-on worksheets.

Year 10 student Jade reviewed algebra skills such as solving equations and then applied Pythagoras' theorem to exam-style questions for extra practice.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Lisa worked through biology topics including calculating Simpson's Diversity Index for biodiversity and interpreting results within real forest ecosystems, using examples from her assignment.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working on biology assignments relied heavily on online sources, rather than a mix of scientific articles and textbooks; this narrowed her research depth ("needed to confirm with the teacher if there were articles specific to the research question").

In Year 8 maths, one student struggled with layout—forgetting signs and not writing out all working made tracking mistakes difficult.

During a Year 5 lesson, another avoided attempting challenging subtraction questions, hesitating before giving an answer. This pause slowed progress, especially when new methods or recall were needed in timed settings.

Recent Achievements

One Highland Park tutor noticed a big shift with Jade (Year 8) in maths: after some reminders on area formulas, she was able to tackle the volume and trickier shapes by herself by lesson's end—something she'd previously hesitated to attempt alone.

In senior biology, Lisa has started actively investigating answers when unsure, rather than waiting for hints, showing much more independence compared to her earlier sessions.

Meanwhile, India (Year 3) surprised her tutor during an addition card game; she completed the sums faster and more accurately than ever before, using the right technique throughout.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Helensvale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like William Duncan State School.
