Go at a pace in which the student feels comfortable, as going too quickly may be the reason they didn't understand it when their teachers taught them. Following this a tutor needs to have done some work on the subject before seeing the student as if the tutor doesn't understand what he/she is saying, the student has no chance. Also going through…

To be able to enable to student to think, and answer hard questions when all else has failed. A tutor shouldn't teach a student but rather guide them to asking the right questions and figuring out the right paths to take in order to get the information that they need. I have only recently finished school, this allows me insight to a more updated…

The ultimate goal for a tutor is to help their students grow and provide them with essential skills to their academic. Most importantly, the tutor has to do this in the attitude of a friend who genuinely wishes their student the best because they need to trust the tutor and know that they are there whenever they need them. I think a tutor can give a student confidence, that a student doesn't need to be intimidated by a STEM class. The general attitude that these subject are 'too hard' or that a student 'will never use these skills again' sets up bright students for failure before they even set foot in a classroom. The most important thing a tutor can do is boost a…

According to me, the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is wake up their curiosity. Getting good grades are important, but equally important is to make sure that the student is enjoying and understanding the subject being taught. As this helps make the student pursue the subjects further. These are the future of the humanity,…

The most important thing is to understand each student as a person so that you can personalise their learning and teach to their strengths. This comes with communicating and listening to what that student has to say to you. A tutor should be able to establish rapport and trust by being honest. This is the critical element to a successful tutoring relationship. Being patient is also very important as what might be obvious and easy for a tutor may not be for that student. Being a good listener is another essential characteristic that a tutor must-have, as it's vital to…

The most important things a tutor can do are: 1. Provide a safe and supportive environment where the student feels comfortable sharing their concerns. This helps to identify the student’s preferred learning style and areas to focus on. 2. Give the student the tools they need to learn on their own. Instead of just giving solutions, a tutor…

I believe that patience and consideration are the most important things, as it can take very different amounts of time for people to understand concepts that I may have learnt at a faster pace, or that another student learnt faster. Inside Holland Park WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Emma worked through ratios, angles, and percentages in detail, including an extended session to address extra questions via FaceTime.

Year 8 student Max focused on algebraic equations and substituting values, practising with worked examples.

For Year 7, Ava revised index laws and prime factor form using step-by-step breakdowns to build confidence with challenging exam-style problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned homework, which meant in the next session, "we had to repeat last week's content" on long division and cross multiplication instead of progressing.

In Year 11, one student left practice exam questions unfinished before a test; as a result, their ability to recall percentage rules under pressure dropped sharply.

A Year 4 child often avoided writing out working for multi-digit addition—leading to confusion with carrying digits and hidden mistakes that took extra time to track down.

One tutor noted, "he tends to doubt himself," so written answers were left blank or erased when uncertain.

Recent Achievements

One Holland Park West tutor noticed that a Year 8 student, Sal, initially struggled to explain maths concepts aloud but recently taught the tutor how to solve ratio and fraction problems—showing real growth in understanding and independence.

In another session, a high schooler named Isaac had always relied on memorising algebraic expressions; after working through the reasoning behind them, he started answering questions confidently without falling back on rote recall.

Meanwhile, Dao in Year 4, who once hesitated to write independently, now writes well-structured sentences with less prompting and has become impressively quick with multiplication facts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Holland Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marshall Road State School.
