I would say the most important things for me as a tutor is to support the students and provide them with past experience in terms of exam strategies and study skills and help them gain confidence in the subject. I will make sure their students fully understand the concepts instead of memorizing them. Maths is one of my academic strength as I have…

I have rarely ever used the same method of explaining a concept/theory on multiple students. It is really important for tutors to understand the needs and abilities of their students in order to maintain progress. It is also crucial for tutors to have time-management and resourceful qualities in order to ensure academic development in students.…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to understand what the student needs and work through those blocks with positive reinforcement. Some students have a hard time understanding concepts while others have no faith in themselves and struggle to retain information. It is most important for a tutor to engage with the student, so that they will be more inclined to be attentive and take the lessons seriously. It is also neccesary to make the neccesary preperations required for the student, e.g background research for foreign topics/ or remodled questions, to suit the student's needs and allow for efficient…

I believe making a student become confident in their own ability is very important. Students sometimes have doubts themselves and I believe I can encourage them to be confident and actually enjoy learning. Tutors are just not there to help students with their students. Their most important role is to be friends and be able to guide their students in the right direction. If tutors become friends, the students listen and trust them more. Of course this does not mean that students can take tutors for a ride. As a tutor I am hardworking, diligent and…

A tutor can provide the pathway of learning. The tutor should understand the position of his/her students. You can inspire a student and make him independent. The goal of a teacher (ironically) is to make himself redundant. Being able to develop self-learning skills and teaching oneself by asking right questions is the key process of learning. Eventually, you can master the art of learning itself and you don't need a teacher. I can be very friendly and…

To be attentive and to address the students personal needs for growth. The tutor should set an ideal example in terms of behaviour motivation and actions- one which a student should be able to look up to but also resonate with. This allows him to engage with the student at a personal level and provide better more relatable academic support, but…

Inside HolroydTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ayaan focused on mastering times tables from 1 to 10 and completed various assessments to check calculation skills.

In Year 8, Mary practiced expanding brackets and factorising expressions within simple linear equations, working through examples step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Emily worked on tax calculations in financial maths and explored practical applications of financial mathematics in real-life scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student working on surface area and volume tasks showed confusion when entering negative numbers into the calculator, as noted: "Small calculator misinputs or incorrect use of negative sign."

In Year 11 Maths, one learner hesitated to attempt worded equation questions, often skipping steps in rearranging equations into gradient-intercept form.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student tackling multiplication tables tended to leave homework incomplete—missing several practice sets for tables 6 and 7.

During algebra sessions with a Year 8 student, work was sometimes messy and lacked clear working, making it harder to spot sign errors when simplifying expressions.

Recent Achievements

One Holroyd tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to ask questions now openly requests help and clarification, making it easier for her to find learning strategies that work.

In Year 8 maths, a student who used to rely heavily on guidance was able to solve equations independently after just one explanation—a real leap in self-reliance.

Meanwhile, a younger student in primary school, who struggled with reading time, is now saying the times tables out loud without needing prompts and can read clocks unaided.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Granville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holy Trinity Primary School.
