A tutor should be understanding of their students' learning and study patterns and help them in a way that will benefit their students the most. A tutor should personally support and encourage their student to become more confident in themselves and their study areas alongside explaining content. I am able to use a range of different explaining…

I believe that providing a comprehensive understanding is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Often students can develop superficial knowledge of a topic or concept, which may be a successful short-term strategy, however, I believe for the student's long-term interests, it is valuable to ensure students' knowledge is genuine to…

Patience because it is very easy for students to get frustrated when they aren't able to immediately understand a concept. Therefore breaking down tasks into smaller steps allows students to always improve their knowledge. Being able to keep students engaged and understand that every student has a different way of learning, which I achieve through…

I think that the main role for a tutor is to guide the srudent through their learning. This is a different role to what a teacher plays as a tutor's role is to help the student build on specific weaknesses and consolidate strong areas in a given subject. Ability to communicate, organisation and…

Listen to them to develop an understanding of the areas they may struggle with or are looking for extra support in. I think also being creative in my approach when required so that the student gets the most out of the sessions and helps them to develop a better understanding. As a result, I think it is important to understand how the student…

Instill the resilience and capacity for students to dedicate and apply themselves to their learning rather than being dependent on a tutor to give them all the answers. I tailored my teaching style and session structure to suit the needs of my students rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. I pride myself in making learning enjoyable…

Previous to having my own children, I loved the confidence building my tutoring has offered and I have had the experiences and joys of their success in their personal journeys from both the students, and their parents. Instilling confidence and therefore motivation for a student is what drives the outcome to their optimal personal success. I have…

Being patient and encourage students to ask questions, and no question is off limits because they are here to learn and improve. Additionally, teaching students in a way that empowers them with new knowledge and the why behind each theoretical concept so that they can understand it deeper, and not just the how. So that when they come across…

The most important things a tutor can do are to foster a supportive learning environment, build the student’s confidence, and equip them with the tools to become independent learners. My strengths as a tutor include patience, clear communication, and the ability to tailor my teaching approach to each student’s learning style. I’m skilled at…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student for mi consideration would be listening to my students and get to know them in order to adjust and assess my strategy and way of teaching as a tutor, and in that way the tutor can be the most creative as it can, giving hints and techniques to students on how to think by themselves, question…

I believe a tutor should assist each student with their learning style to achieve the best in a subject and also be a good role model to help them in their school journey. The most important contribution a tutor can provide is to assist in establishing great study habits that work, setting the student up for success in the long run. Whilst there are many tutors out there that merely provide short term help through comprehensive cheat sheets and the like, a real tutor will teach the transferable skills such that they…

Inside HughesdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Harry revised core trigonometry concepts and completed a past VCE exam under timed conditions.

A Year 10 student focused on matrix arithmetic, working through examples of both multiplication and transformations using visual aids.

For Year 6, Zara practised converting between 12-hour and 24-hour time formats and solved problems involving telling the time on analogue clocks, including interpreting phrases like "quarter to" and "half past."

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student "occasionally skipped through a question and made an error"—not showing all working led to repeated mistakes in algebraic tasks, which slowed progress during revision.

For a Year 10 student revising domain and range, relying mainly on visual memory rather than written notes meant graph interpretation errors lingered.

In English (Year 7), essay writing suffered because ideas weren't clearly organised; as noted, "she needs to follow the essay plan so she stays on topic."

Meanwhile, unfinished homework in both Years 6 and 11 left key gaps unaddressed before tests—especially with simultaneous equations and creative writing tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Hughesdale tutor noticed a big shift with one Year 9 student who used to guess at equations but now talks through her reasoning out loud and checks her work before moving on.

In a senior maths session, a Year 11 boy who'd previously struggled with polynomial long division was able to tackle an application problem without any prompting by the end of the lesson.

Meanwhile, one younger student in Year 4 completed all her homework and even took on some extra-challenging extension questions she would have avoided just weeks ago, finishing them without needing help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh Grammar.
