A tutor is not just someone whose only job is to formally teach a student. A student needs a true mentor and guide just as much as he needs a teacher. This is where an actual tutor's true responsibility comes to play. As someone who was in a high school student very recently, I am well aware of the problems students actually face. Whether it…

Actually speaking, the tutor should focus on potential development rahter than merely improving the skills of a student. It could be best tutors can adopt practices such as NLP ( neuro linguistic programming) to boost rapid learning of a student. But for that only truly commited tutors would raise their hands. Since it reqires a lot of hard yards.…

A tutor can help shape the future of a child by helping them in studies and boosting their confidence. They not only help them in their homework but also help them in expanding their knowledge in the subject which might give them an extra edge towards others. In a longer run a right tutor can ignite new ideas for the future and help carve a path…

A tutor must teach the underlying concepts and "why things work" rather than just "how things work". A good tutor is much more than just a problem solver. Good tutor builds capability in students to actually use what they learnt to solve and analyze complex real world problems. Strong background and grasp of the subject in question. Currently a…

Always motivate and engage students, promote self-believe and create interesting lesson plans 3. I believe that the two most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to help them gain a passion for their studies, and to teach them to apply their study skills to all of their subjects. I think that these two factors can really help students succeed with school and allow them to reach their full potential elsewhere in life. One of…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to create a safe and supportive learning space. Similar to my strengths, I think a tutor needs to be flexible and patient with any and every student that they teach. A stubborn tutor that doesn't try to adapt to each student's personal needs or preferences won't be effective in their teaching, and a similar result follows for an impatient tutor. Additionally, any tutor should have a large bank…

Support. The education system can be tough, and confidence is fluid along with grades, and it is up to the tutor to remind a student of how far they have come and how capable the student is. The largest impact on results is often not the time spent studying, but the foundational pillar that is psychology as this impacts every part of education.…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel comfortable learning the material the school gives them and to develop good study skills. Inside HughesdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Harry revised core trigonometry concepts and completed a past VCE exam under timed conditions.

A Year 10 student focused on matrix arithmetic, working through examples of both multiplication and transformations using visual aids.

For Year 6, Zara practised converting between 12-hour and 24-hour time formats and solved problems involving telling the time on analogue clocks, including interpreting phrases like "quarter to" and "half past."

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student "occasionally skipped through a question and made an error"—not showing all working led to repeated mistakes in algebraic tasks, which slowed progress during revision.

For a Year 10 student revising domain and range, relying mainly on visual memory rather than written notes meant graph interpretation errors lingered.

In English (Year 7), essay writing suffered because ideas weren't clearly organised; as noted, "she needs to follow the essay plan so she stays on topic."

Meanwhile, unfinished homework in both Years 6 and 11 left key gaps unaddressed before tests—especially with simultaneous equations and creative writing tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Hughesdale tutor noticed a big shift with one Year 9 student who used to guess at equations but now talks through her reasoning out loud and checks her work before moving on.

In a senior maths session, a Year 11 boy who'd previously struggled with polynomial long division was able to tackle an application problem without any prompting by the end of the lesson.

Meanwhile, one younger student in Year 4 completed all her homework and even took on some extra-challenging extension questions she would have avoided just weeks ago, finishing them without needing help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh Grammar.
