The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only to teach them how to solve problems, but also the way of thinking to solve them and applying the experience to use their skills in life. It is also important that they be supportive of the student no matter the student's academic level. I simplify the steps of math problems and…

First of all, which a tutor can do is to be a friend who motivates them, make them learn, make them understand without any pressure and excel them in their early stage of career. Secondly, it's all about how comfortable the students are with tutor to ask them doubts without any hesitation. Thirdly, make them learn how to do a smart work instead…

Help the student visualise or truly understand the concept instead of having to memorise the equations. If a student understands the concept, it could become intuitive for the student to know how to use the equation. One other important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be encouraging and empathetic, build the student's confidence and…

I believe effective tutoring comes from understanding a student’s perspective when learning. A tutor who can do this can make lessons more engaging, identify learning barriers, and help students build genuine confidence and enjoyment in learning. Achieving this requires patience, empathy, and a willingness to understand each student’s…

Tutors have to be cooperative and empathetic to teach students. Moreover, they need to embody leadership qualities. It is necessary for the students to enjoy learning so that they can have a complete grasp of knowledge about a particular subject. This will allow them to achieve their desired results. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student’s confidence, not just help them get the answer. A good tutor should be patient, supportive, and able to explain concepts clearly step by step. It is also important to create a comfortable environment where the student feels safe to make mistakes, ask questions, and slowly…

I am of the opinion that the most important things for tutors to do is to be patient and make the student feel comfortable. It is perfectly normal not to understand or struggle with ideas that are taught in class immediately and students should feel as though they aren't getting judged because of it. Tutors are their to help and improve their…

I consider patience to be the most important virtue in a tutor, setting small checkpoints between certain topics is a good strategy. A tutor should always pause and ask if the student has any questions or doubts about the concept. A tutor should make the student feel comfortable around them and they should not hesitate to ask any questions - no…

Inside Huntleys CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Rose worked on subtraction with borrowing using the algorithm method for 2–4 digit numbers, and practiced rounding as well as identifying greater than and less than symbols.

Year 8 student Jess focused on algebra homework involving factorisation (including negatives), and revised circle formulas by distinguishing between radius and diameter for circumference.

For Imogen in Year 7, recent lessons addressed converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, plus multiplying and dividing fractions to build confidence for word problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student often avoided writing out full working for maths—especially on simple addition or times tables—preferring to count on fingers or ask for reassurance after each step. As one tutor observed, "she checked with me after every answer, even when she was correct." This led to slow progress during quizzes and left her uncertain when working alone.

In contrast, a Year 10 student tackling algebraic word problems tended to skim over key details in questions, sometimes missing critical hints or misreading specifications. During exam practice, this resulted in lost marks and repeated confusion about what the question actually required.

Recent Achievements

One Huntleys Cove tutor noticed a Year 9 student who, after weeks of uncertainty, began using number lines and worksheets to finally tackle multiplying and dividing negative numbers on her own—she now moves on to linear equations.

In Year 11 maths, Jess has shifted from relying heavily on prompts to independently correcting minor errors in complex algebra questions; she even started asking for tougher problems without hesitation.

Meanwhile, a primary student who used to hesitate with times tables recently finished a worksheet of six times tables both in and out of order at full speed and with perfect accuracy.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riverside Girls High School.
