Most tutors forget that students never enjoy tutoring, so it is important to set interesting challenges to keep students motivated and also polishing their skills using unorthodox methods. Too much of the time tutors just read off the textbook and don't provide alternative methods or keep the students' focus on their work. I believe the students…

Ultimately, a tutor must teach his/her student to be able to rely on themselves and think autonomously when problem solving i.e. not to be afraid of trial and error. I would say my strengths are attributes such as patience with the student (repetition when necessary), determination in getting the message across, and a friendly attitude towards all…

The most important aspects I can do for the student is being able to help the student outside of the lesson time with questions that they might have before an exam or even homework questions. My strengths as a tutor for me are that I am able to deliver the information in an understanding way in different methods to help the student understand. I…

Be an attentive listener then explain the concept in the way your student will best understand it. It is imperative to first observe where your student's thought process is going wrong and subsequently resolve your student's doubts by communicating effectively and calmly. Patience, most tutors give up after their students don't follow along with…

Growth - It's not just about academic success, it's about the idea that, as a Tutor, it's your duty to make sure the students grow in their chosen subject. i think the best thing a tutor can do in order to properly teach a student is for the tutor to try and put their level of thinking at the same level as the student in order to communicate effective information that is more likely to be retained by the student. i think my biggest strength is adapting to each students needs and way of learning. i…

Everything starts with guidance. Words are so powerful. So the main duty for a tutor is to give the key points to the student and make the student love the subject. So if you give the right guidance to the student they will be more courageous in the following courses. Because i was a honours student both in high school and university, i believe…

A tutor can guide students to achieve their goals, make them confident and sow seeds of morality and wisdom. At a young age, the values that a tutor can imply on a student are of paramount importance. I am highly passionate about teaching. I feel one of the, if not the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is establish a sense of belief. If a student doesn't believe in their own ability and lacks confidence, then it is much harder for them to learn and more importantly it isn't enjoyable and rewarding. If a student believes in their ability then they are very likely to…

The most important thing for a tutor to do is not to continuously teach a concept but to teach it once (if the student has not learnt properly from school) and solidify that knowledge. It's also important to be not only a tutor, but a mentor as well. Strengths:: *Strong Communication of Ideas *Experience with Tutoring of all…

Inside Hurstville GroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Clancy focused on dividing and multiplying fractions, building confidence through step-by-step examples.

For Year 9, Jack worked on geometry by proving triangles are congruent using logical reasoning, as well as practising solving for the unknown in algebraic equations.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lachlan concentrated on mastering all operations with fractions—including the reciprocal rule—and strengthened skills with real-world fraction problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 mathematics, a student was regularly reminded to practice the 6, 7, 8, and 9 times tables but left these incomplete at home. This meant that time in sessions was spent reviewing old ground rather than building new skills.

For a Year 10 student preparing for the HSC, "concentration is probably the greatest challenge"—with focus lapsing during longer tasks like probability questions, which led to unfinished problems.

In Year 11 algebra revision, one student hesitated to write out working due to perfectionism; as noted: "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

Recent Achievements

One Hurstville Grove tutor recently noticed a shift with Lachlan, a high school student who used to hesitate during maths sessions—he's now confidently verbalising his answers and asking for extra practice, especially with fractions and the reciprocal rule.

In chemistry, Rogan managed to connect key concepts by himself for the first time, particularly understanding why valency matters in reactions—a topic he'd previously struggled to piece together.

Meanwhile, Arianna (Year 7) has started persisting through mixed problem sets instead of skipping tricky questions, showing more determination and completing her set without giving up partway through.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oatley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Catholic Primary School.
