Inside Invermay ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Greta worked on multiplying and dividing negative numbers as well as simplifying algebraic expressions involving like terms, with some revision of fractions and decimals using number lines.

Year 8 student Maddy focused on trigonometry concepts such as labelling triangle sides, writing sine, cosine, and tangent ratios, and rearranging equations to solve for unknowns using a calculator.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James tackled simultaneous linear equations through substitution and practiced solving quadratic equations in word problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student often left working out incomplete or unclear, especially when subtracting or dividing. As one tutor noted, "improving her layout & clear written working is important as this will help her to understand her own thought process."

In a senior Maths Methods session, a Year 11 student relied heavily on intuition instead of showing all algebraic steps in induction proofs—mistakes were missed until revisited together.

Another high schooler struggled to recall formulas under test pressure and sometimes copied equations incorrectly, leading to compounding errors.

Unfinished homework and rushed answers meant key feedback wasn't applied before moving forward.

Recent Achievements

One Invermay Park tutor noticed a Year 8 student who, after initially mixing up the steps for fraction addition, is now able to find common denominators independently and work through problems with just a quick reminder.

A high schooler in Year 10 had previously struggled to communicate what was confusing about multiplication techniques but has started signalling when she's stuck and can now complete long lattice multiplications independently.

Meanwhile, during a recent senior session, another student used exponent laws accurately even when equations were presented in unfamiliar formats—a big shift from earlier hesitation—and finished by solving a non-standard exponent problem on their own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ballarat Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ballarat North Primary School.
